Homework #6 – Due February 28th

Question 1 (Graded Question)

The sketch above shows flow over an isothermal plate within the laminar section of the
thermal boundary layer. The temperature distribution is shown for the position where
x=2cm.
a) Which is greater, the surface temperature of the plate of the fluid temperature?
b) Sketch the temperature distribution for x=1cm and x=3cm. Indicate the point (of
these three) where heat flux is the smallest
c) In class we talked about how the free stream velocity influences both the thermal
and velocity boundary layers (both become thinner as free stream velocity
increases) On a new drawing, sketch a temperature distribution for x=2 for a low
free stream velocity and a high free stream velocity. Indicate the one which will
result in a smaller local convective heat flux.

Question 2
Air is flowing over a surface and the temperature distribution in the boundary layer can
be approximated as:
𝑇 − 𝑇𝑠 𝑢∞ 𝑦
= 1 − exp (−𝑃𝑟 )
𝑇∞ − 𝑇𝑠 𝜈

where y is the distance normal to the surface and the Prandtl number (𝑃𝑟 = 𝑐𝑝 𝜇/𝑘)=0.7.
What is the heat flux if the free fluid temperature is 127ºC, surface temperature is 27ºC,
and the ratio between the free fluid velocity and kinematic viscosity is 5000m-1? The
thermal conductivity coefficient for air is 0.0263 W/m⋅K. [A: q”=-9295W/m2]
Question 3
Water at a temperature of 25ºC flows over one of the surfaces of a steel wall. The wall is
35cm thick and has a surface temperature of 40ºC. On the other surface of the steel wall,
the temperature is 100ºC. (Stainless steel ks = 17.3 W/m⋅K; Water kw = 0.632 W/m⋅K.)
a) Derive the convection coefficient for the water flow under steady state conditions.
A:198 W/m2K
b) What is the temperature gradient in the wall? A: -171ºC/m
c) What is the temperature gradient in the water that is in contact with the wall?
A:4699ºC/m
d) Sketch the two temperature gradients on the same figure
