OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

 Identify the influence of parental involvement to the academic performance of

Grade 7 students as observed by the teachers.

 Explore the positive influence of parental involvement on the academic

performance of Grade 7 students.

 Determine the negative influence of parental involvement on the academic

performance of Grade 7 students.

 Provide recommendations for parents and educators about effective ways to

support Grade 7 students' academic performance.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Joyce Epstein’s Theory of Overlapping Spheres of Influences

The theory distinguishes between an interdependent view of school-family-

community influences and a separate view of influence. Epstein illustrates the theory

with an example:

"In some schools, educators still say, 'If the family would just do its job, we could
do our job.' And there are still families who say, 'I raised this child; now it is your job to
educate her.'" Other educators say, "I cannot do my job without the help of my students'
families and the support of this community." And some parents say, "I really need to
know what is going on in school in order to help my child."

Joyce Epstein's Framework of Six Types of Involvement

One of the most significant frameworks in the field of school, family, and

community engagement and partnership is Epstein's Framework of Six Types of

Involvement or also called as "School-Family-Community Partnership Model"

The six types of involvement are:

1. Parenting- Involvement occurs when schools understand their students'

families, family practices and home surroundings promote "children as

students."

2. Communicating- involvement occurs when educators, students, and families

“design effective forms of school-to-home and home-to-school

communications.”

3. Volunteering- involvement occurs when educators, students, and families

“recruit and organize parent help and support” and count parents as an

audience for student activities.

4. Learning at Home- involvement occurs when families are given information,

suggestions, or training on how to "help students at home with homework and

other curriculum-related activities, decisions, and planning."

5. Decision Making- involvement occurs when schools “include parents in

school decisions” and “develop parent leaders and representatives.”

6. Collaborating with the Community- involvement occurs when community

services, resources, and partners are integrated into the educational process,

it is said to "strengthen school programs, family practices, and student

learning and development."
