The two waves have the same period of 3 s and different amplitudes.

(a) State what is meant by the principle of superposition. [2]

(b) At t = 0 the two waves are just about to overlap.

(i) Sketch the wave pattern at t = 1.5 s. [2]

(ii) Sketch the wave pattern when the two waves completely overlap and name the type of interference that is
occurring. [2]

(c) A wave with amplitude A is observed to have an intensity 0.42 W m−2 at a distance 0.5 m from the source.
(i) Determine the intensity of the wave at distance 0.5 m when the source amplitude 3A. [3]

(ii) Determine the distance from the source at which the intensity is 0.84 W m−2 when the source amplitude is
3A. [2]

Question 10 CALCULATOR

(a) Distinguish between unpolarized light and polarized light. [2]

(b) Sketch a graph on the axis below to show how intensity of transmitted light as the polarizing filter is rotated
through the angles of 00 to 1800 . Be sure to include values on the axes. [2]

After passing through the first polarizer, the light passes through a second polarizer with a initially horizontal axis
of polarization.

(c) The first polarizer is rotated by θ1 = 20o . The second polarizer is rotated by θ2 = 50o in the direction shown.
Calculate the intensity of the light transmitted through the second polarizer. [3]

(d) Both polarizers are reset to their initial positions. On the axis below, sketch a graph of intensity versus angle as
the second polarizer rotates through 360o . [3]

(a) Outline why there's no light transmitted by polariser B . [2]

(b) (i) Explain how a third polariser C can be used so that light will be transmitted by polariser B . [3]

(ii) Polariser C is inserted between the two polarisers A and B with its transmission axis at an angle 45o to
both of them. Determine the intensity of the transmitted light in terms of I0 . [3]
