Time : 2 hrs and 15 Min Max Marks : 30

Answer ALL questions from Section A and any FOUR questions from Section B.

Section A

In each of Questions 1-4, write the correct option/options out of the four choices (A),
(B), (C) and (D).
(1) Let X = (0, 2] and A be the σ-algebra of all Lebesgue measurable subsets of
(0, 2]. Define [2]
Z
π
ν(E) = sin dx, E ∈ A.
E x
Let F = ( 11 , 1 ) ∪ ( 23 , 2]. Then for the signed measure ν, the set F is
60 5
(A) a positive set
(B) a negative set
(C) a null set
(D) neither a positive nor a negative set.
(2) Let ν be a signed measure on a measurable space (X, A), and suppose µ1 and µ2
are measures on (X, A) such that ν = µ1 − µ2 . Then [2]
(A) ν + ≤ µ1 and ν − ≤ µ2
(B) ν + ≤ µ1 but ν − ≤ µ2 need not be true
(C) ν + ≤ µ1 but ν − ≥ µ2
(D) ν − ≤ µ2 but ν + ≥ µ1 .
(3) Let X = N and A be the collection of all finite subsets and their complements.
Define, for E ∈ A,

+∞, if E is an infite set
µ(E) =
0, otherwise.
Then [3]
(A) A is a σ-algebra
(B) A is an algebra but not a σ-algebra
(C) µ is a measure
(D) µ is finitely additive but not countably additive.
(4) Let µ, ν1 and ν2 be nontrivial measures on the measurable space (X, A).
Consider the statements:
(I) ν1 << µ and µ ⊥ ν2 imply ν1 ⊥ ν2 .
(II) ν1 << µ and µ ⊥ ν2 imply ν1 << ν2 .
Then [3]
(A) both (I) and (II) are true
(B) (I) is true but (II) is false
(C) (II) is true but (I) is false
(D) both (I) and (II) are false.

Section B

(5) Let (µn ) be a sequence of finite measures on a measurable space (X, A). Define λ
on A by [5]

X 1 µn (A)
λ(A) = n µ (X)
.
n=1
2 n

Show that λ is a measure on A, and that µn << λ, ∀n. Further deduce the
following: if (µn ) is a sequence of finite signed measures on (X, A), then there
exists a measure µ on (X, A) such that µ(X) = 1 and each µn is absolutely
continuous with respect to µ.
(6) On the measurable space (N, P(N)) let ν be a σ-finite measure and µ be the
counting measure. Show that ν << µ and find the Radon-Nikodym derivative

[ dµ ]. [5]
p
(7) Let f ∈ L (µ), 1 ≤ p < ∞. Show that for a given ε > 0, there exists a
measurable simple funtion ϕ vanishing outside a set of finite measure such that
kf − ϕkp < ε. [5]
∗ ∗
(8) Let µ be an outer measure on X. Show that the class A of all µ -measurable
subsets of X forms a σ-algebra. [5]
0
(9) Let C be a semi algebra of subsets of a nonempty set Y , R be the collection of
all finite unions of sets in C, A1 be the σ-algebra generated by C and A2 be the
σ-algebra generated by R0 . Show that R0 is the algebra generated by C and that
A1 = A2 . [5]
