This is because the red line is below

This line becomes lower than plan #1

Using the point of intersection, make a

This point of intersection shows

that if each person sells 10 items

The point of intersection shows us
that if Mandy will be purchasing 3

with the first plan that included a
monthly fee.

a. What is the equation of this linear function? ______________
b. How many lawns does Kara have to cut to break even (have a total profit of zero)?
16 lawns

c. What does the y-intercept represent in this situation?

The y-intercept represents Kara’s profit before cutting any lawns. A profit of $-800
indicates that she purchased $800 worth of equipment.

b. Should the points on the graph be connected or not? Explain your reasoning.
Points on a graph should only be connected when the data is continuous. If you can take any x-value from one
to eight and substitute it into the equation then the points should be connected. In this case, we are restricted to
the x-values being whole numbers (you cannot have a fraction of a person). While the points on the graph of the
algebraic equation can be connected, the points on the graph of the contextual situation should not be connected.
c. What sets of numbers accurately describe the domain and range in this situation?
This question gets at the difference between the algebraic domain and range and
the domain and range in terms of the context of the situation.
