What was the status of Mughal empire (our country) before decline,
Why is it necessary to learn about Mughal declines ?
1. One of the biggest and powerful empire of its time( size as
percentage of area of today’s India - 122% )
2. In 1690, during aurengzeb’s reign, the annual revenue of the
Mughal empire was 450 million usd, 10 times more than king
Louis of France’s revenue.
3. That time, India surpasses the Chinese economy and became the
worlds largest economy, worth over 90 billion dollars.
4. In 1700 India consisted the 25% of total world gdp, which after
independence only remains at 3%. ( now you can assume, the loot
of Britishers)
4

took back all his territories from Russia and turkey
• Campaigns of nadir shah made Persia virtually bankrupt, and to
revive it he was attracted towards the wealth of India.
• He observed the weakness of Mughal empire and attacked Delhi in

• Mughal nobles were not ready to unite in this worsened situation,
to save the land.
• Mughal army was crushed at karnal by nadir shah on 13-feb-1739.
• Muhammad shah was taken prisoner by nadir shah.

Death of Muhammad shah and 3rd civil war.
• After the death of Muhammad shah, civil war for power broke out among power
hungry nobles.
• Moreover Ahmed shah Abdali, repeatedly attacked and plundered north India. He
defeated the Marathas in 3rd battle of panipat in 1761.
• After all these attacks by nadir and Ahmed shah, the Mughal empire just remained
the empire of Delhi. Shah Alam II
• See, there must be many forces behind the fall of Mughal empire. These were;
(1) - It all started during the aurengzeb’s reign, reasons were;
1. Men and money killing policy of expansion to the farthest geographical limits, which is
uncontrollable due to lack of communication.
2. Policy of not accepting the Maratha’s and other Rulers demand for regional autonomy.
3. Long campaign against Marathas drained the resources and neglect the north west front.
4. His failure to control the Maratha’s worked as a dent on prestige of empire and army and
encouraged locals to dream for independence.
5. Rajput Rajas were the main pillars of strength for mughals, but due to suppression of
Rajputs by aurengzeb, they were no more loyal to Mughals.
6. Peasants were deeply dissatis ed by the oppression from zamindars and nobles, and
they challenged the aurengzeb’s administration around Delhi. These were known as
satnami, Jat and Sikh uprisings and these were one of the rst popular rebellions in history.
7. He imposed jizyah, destroyed Hindu temples, alienate the Hindus from administration on
the other hand his forefather’s Mughal state was a secular state. Akbar, Jahangir and
Shahjahan made very friendly relations with Hindus.

(2) - nobles and princes.
• Civil wars between princes and nobles, drained resources, many able
soldiers and commanders were killed in these.
• Kings and Nobles started living luxury and easy life, became sel sh and
corrupt and lacked devotion for empire.
• Nobles became hereditary, monopolise the o ces.
• Nobles carved out their own private principalities.
• To save money, they did not maintain the ‘reserved quota of troops and it
leads to weakness of army power.
• To earn more they put high taxes and suppressed the peasants which later
on lead to rebellion.
• Basically after Bahadur shah I, a process started in which mostly the
original rulers worked as face to powerful nobles and outsiders , to
administrate.

Economical causes
• National and international trade was hampered due to lack of communication within
and with foreign states and ghting and focusing on acquiring lands only.
• Due to not getting the salary on time, army became rebellious and indisciplined.
Sociopolitical causes.
• Absence of political nationalism among peoples, in that time people did not feel that
they were all Indians.
• each chieftain was ghting for their own bene ts.
• People were only loyal to persons, tribes, castes and religious sects only.
• Zamindars Rebels against central authority for independence.
• Basically no notion of ghting for nation amongst any, because there is no idea of

Final blow was given by attacks of nadir shah and Ahmed shah, they
drained the wealth completely, ruined the trade, destroyed the military
power and then nally British challenge took away the last hope.
None of the Indian powers rose to claim the heritage of grand mughals, if
they were ghting to eradicate mughals, then they must have lled the
space, unite and save the country.
This also must be kept in mind that these Indian chieftains did not
became the face of hindus or muslims or any, they plundered everything
that came into their way.. Also they have fought many wars between
themselves. ( but these things were the part of raj dharma of that time,
which was obviously di erent to today’s India and world )
Moreover, not all but many of these Indian powers became allies to the
British and seen the plunder of Indian wealth for 200 years.( very few were
the exceptions, and these were those which were troubled by Britishers
by any mean)

LESSON 1
Decline of the Mughal empire
The story of greed everywhere
Part 7 of lesson 1 -Mind maps and revision
Final conclusion
Conclusion on how a powerful and rich empire fall apart.
Religion based Policies :- an empire and its administration cannot sustain, by
polarising and neglecting the majority of people on the grounds of religion, the
majority were Hindus and Hindu kings, aurengzeb simply tried to suppressed them
in his later years. Hindus were eradicated from the high posts, their temples were
destroyed, tried to conquered their lands, led to disbelief and dissatisfaction of
people and kings, nally decline in nances due to aurengzeb’s war for aggression
on Deccan, marathas.
Civil wars for throne :- between the princes, backed by powerful nobles.
Greed on every ground :- greed of kings for luxury and comfort leads to incapability
and ine ciency, greed of nobles for more power and money and even making semi
independent states, greed of alliances- the small kingdoms, which were the
strength of Mughal empire during Akbar to Shahjahan’s time.
Internal rebellions :-rebellions by peasant classes and small kingdoms.
