Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is a Multiplayer online battle arena, a Mobile game
developed and published by Shanghai Moonton technology. The game has become
popular in Southeast Asia and will be. Event at the 2019 Southeast Asia Games. is
arguably one of the most popular Mobile games currently being played. Mobile
Legends was Indonesia's highest ranked Mobile Legendsgames for both downloads
and gaming in January 2018. In Spain Mobile. Legends is grossingwell too, also
dropping out of the top 200 only three times. In the Philippines Mobile Legends is also
the most grossing free online games to download and recognized that the Mobile
Legends Is popular among Filipinos and that we are one of the top countries to play
the game, Manila-Philippines is where the most venue are being held of the Mobile
Legends: Bang Bang professional League or MPL that is inviting teams to play like the
teams Aether Main, Bren Esports, EVOS PH, EXECRATION, Cignal Ultra, ArchAngel, Etc.
Most of the students are playing Mobile Legends to reduce the level of stress or
Anxiety level due to activities in daily living but some of them is getting addicted to the
game and that has a big factor in their studies Teacher and Parents should train the
students to set limits on playing Mobile Legends and accepts the responsibilities within
the study not within the game. The objective of this study is to know or determine the
effects of playing mobile legends on CCSS12 Students (Rawis, Legazpy, Albay, 2022).
Addiction studies have been conducted in the context of hedonic technology, with
social networking sites and online games being the most popular research focus (Lee,
Cheung, Chan 2021). For example, online game addiction is increasingly happening. The
relationships between online gaming addiction and mental health components, Kamal
and Wok (2020), namely depression, anxiety, and loneliness, were found to be
significant and positive. Based on the social cognitive theory tested, all the developed
hypotheses were accepted. This study suggests that future research should examine
the impact of online gaming addiction on academic performance and physical health.
One of the most popular games in the Philippines which Filipinos are drawn to playing
mobile games is the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. According to the official website of
the game mobile legend Kishimoto et al. (2021), the game was published by Moonton
on July 14, 2016 .The game set for this game is Multiplayer Online Battle Arena
(MOBA) having a 5v5 which is the maximum number of members per team. While each
member of the team will choose their heroes with their respective roles (tank, fighter,
assassin, mage, marksman, support, and jungler), the players are going to battle with
the other team to defeat their base in real-time gameplay . This specific mobile game is
considered as Esports wherein the game is being done with the use of technology
particularly in computer and mobile phone. the researchers wants to address the
student addiction levels and its impact to the students academic performance

Theoretical-Conceptual Framework
The study focuses on mobile legend addiction (Independent Variable) and its impact
towards the students attendance rates (Dependent Variable). Here are some factors that
may change the course of the study. Time management(Moderating Variable) may
pose a barrier in the study if the student has time management. The sleep pattern
(Control Variable) of a student are also one of the factors that the study should be
aware of since it can hinder the students academic performance.
THE PROBLEM (Separate page)

Statement of the Problem

The researcher aims to find out the level of mobile legends addiction and academic
performance of selected students in Ocana National High School.

1. What is the level of mobile legends addiction of selected senior high school
students in Ocana national high school when taken as an entire group and
when classified according to sex, age, and section?

2.what is the impact of mobile legend addiction towards the academic

performance of the students regarding these levels of addiction:

2.1 normal
2.2 mild
2.3 moderate

Statement of Null Hypothesis

Significance of the Study (Separate page)

This will discuss the benefits of the following subject throughout the study. Students -
This will provide students with important knowledge and awareness regarding the
effects of online games like Mobile Legends and how it impacts our academic
performance, mentally and emotionally. It will also give us the realization that playing
too many online games can damage our mind and maybe take us away from our better
future.

parents - they will benefit from this study. Parents will be well aware of the problem
with regards to their children regarding the effects of too much usage of gadgets and
mobile games with respect to the academic performance of their children. This will
encourage them to help their children and motivate them in their studies in order to
minimize the effects of too much online games and help their children achieve higher
academic performance.

Teachers - This study would guide the teachers to determine what suitable approach is
best to the students who are suffering from this kind of situation who are always
inattentive and lacking interest in their education. The teachers would also be able to
understand why some students prefer to play online games rather than to study.
Future Researchers - The ideas present in this study can be useful as reference data in
conducting innovative research rather in testing the validity of the related findings.
Further, this will give them a background or an overview through the rest of their
study.

Scope and Limitations of the Study (Separate page)

This study will focus on the major impacts of students' overwhelming obsession with

mobile games, particularly among Senior High School students at Ocana National High

School in the years 2023-2024. The study will be limited to Grade 11 students at

ONHS. Teachers, college, and elementary students are not included in this study.
Respondents to this study will be given a survey questionnaire and interviewed. The

completion of this study is expected to take at least three months. During that period,

the researchers will focus on gathering important data and information about the impact

of mobile games on Grade 11 students at Ocana National High School. the study delimit

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

(Separate Page)

The Study of, (Lockwood, 2020) In her work entitled, "8 Mind-Blowing Health
Benefits of Playing Mobile Games" Lockwood stated in her studies that playing
mobile games have health benefits such as Improved Cognitive Skills,
Enhanced Concentration, Treatment for Autism, etc... Proper time management
and self-control is needed to gain the benefits and to avoid being addicted to
online games. According to her, playing online games have distressing side
effects but those side effects can be avoided by having self- control and proper
time management. According to (Kuss, & Griffiths, 2012) In their work entitled,
Internet and Gaming Addiction That excessive use of Internet has been linked
to a variety of negative psychosocial consequences. It includes mental
disorders such as somatization, obsessive-compulsive and other anxiety
disorders, depression, and dissociation, as well as personality traits and
pathology, such as introversion and psychoticism. They said that the
Prevalence estimates range from 2% to 15%, depending on the respective
sociocultural context, sample, and assessment criteria utilized. They also
claimed that Internet addiction has been considered a serious threat to mental
health in Asian countries with extensive broadband usage, particularly South
Korea and China. (Lonewolf, 2016) said in his book entitled, "Breaking the
Video Game Addiction: Advice from A Former Gamer, from West Bow Press" a
gamer is someone who plays games more than at just a moderate level, it also
said in his book that gaming is a lifestyle for a gamer.According to (Garnada,
2020) in his work entitled "Online Gaming Addiction and Academic Attitude: The
Case of College Students in The Philippines" computer games are one of the
ways to eliminate boredom, but sometimes the enjoyment of playing computer
games turns to addiction because of lack in self-discipline, addiction in playing
computer games is a worrying aspects of the modern-day technologically able
youth, several students spend lots of hours on gadgets. That's why computer
and gadgets became their primary source of entertainment, because of that,
they forget some of the rules of being a student. The Study of (Cortes, Alcalde,
& Camacho, 2012) entitled "Effects of Computer Gaming on High School
Students' Performance in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines" said in their research
that there's a good side to every bad side in things just like playing online
games. Studies indicate that children who play computer games can improve
visual intelligence skills. As it practices the mental sharpness of an individual
either to those who play it, just like the students of SDNHS. It was found that
high school students who used educational software at home scored higher in
computer Literacy tests among other students. Online games have good effects
as long as the user has self-discipline and good time management, especially
for Grade 12 students.

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY (separate page)

Research Design

This is a quantitative research study which will specifically employ a sample

survey design, a type of descriptive research design that will determine the impact on a

student's academic performance.

In this research, the selection of Grade 11 HUMSS students at Ocaña National

High School will be identified using one of the instruments in research called a

questionnaire. Adopted questionnaire is used for data gathering. Respondents will be

tasked to answer the questionnaire based on their perception of mobile legend addiction

on their writing academic performance. Researchers will obtain answers through a

questionnaire. Respondents will be selected using the purposive sampling method,

Research Environment (describes the setting of the study.) The study will be

conducted at Ocaña National High School, right across barang hall which is located in

Ocaña, Carcar City, Cebu.

Research Subjects/Respondents/Informants

Ocaña National High School serves approximately 3000 students. There are 1,143

estimated students in senior high and 271 estimated students in the Grade 11 HUMSS

strand, which includes the respondents we will select. In this study, we will use the

purposive sampling method, a type of simple sampling, to collect the desired sample.

Inclusion criteria: (1) Students must be enrolled in Ocana National High School, (2)

Grade 11 HUMSS students, and (3) aged 17-20. Exclusion criteria include: (1) not

attending Ocana National High School, (2) being between the ages of 17 and 20, and

(3) not being a Grade 11 HUMSS student.

Research Instrument

This study will “adopt” a survey questionnaire from “MOBILE LEGENDS

ADDICTION AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
IN NORTHERN ANTIQUE VOCATIONAL SCHOOL” where it will employ a 4-point Likert
scale ranging from (always-never) in which the respondent will answer by checking the
designated column under their choice of number.
Research Procedures

Before collecting data, researchers must create a consent form that will be signed by

the principal and practical research teacher to ensure that respondents understand

that the research study is for academic purposes. During the data collection, the

researchers will go room by room in various sections of Grade 11- Humanities and

Social Sciences only in the afternoon. Researchers will humbly request permission from

the teacher to collect data within that specific section, and they will be greeted. On the

other hand, researchers will wait for the questionnaire to be returned in the

meantime, and if there is any misunderstanding, researchers will guide the perplexed

respondent in understanding the questionnaire without commanding what to answer

to avoid any form of bias, and will also provide some alternatives, such as a translated

questionnaire, in order to ensure data accuracy. Following data collection, researchers

will proceed to data

Statistical Treatment of Data

The study will employ the Descriptive Analysis as the statistical treatment

of data. This is ideal for the study since the researchers will just simply
display the gathered data that are needed to be measured. The researchers

will manually compute the given data using the Descriptive treatment.
