Activity 2 Read the text and find another legend/folktale from your living place and compare with
the story about Princess Mandalika!

The Legend of Princess Mandalika

Long time ago, in the kingdom of Lombok, there was a wise king named King Tonjang
Beru. He had a queen named Dewi Seranting and a beautiful daughter named Princess
Mandalika. Princess Mandalika's beauty and kindness were renowned throughout the kingdom
and beyond.

Princes from various kingdoms came to propose to her. Not wanting to hurt anyone's
feelings or cause a war, Princess Mandalika devised a plan. The king organized an archery
competition at Seger Kuta Beach, where all the princes would participate. However, as the
competition progressed, there was no clear winner. The princes began to argue, and the situation
escalated into a potential war as their soldiers got involved. Worried about the consequences,
Princess Mandalika made a courageous decision. She addressed the crowd, her voice ringing out
with conviction,”I do not wish to cause strife among you, my dear suitors. Let us embrace peace
and unity for the betterment of all”,she said.

Princess Mandalika declared that she did not want to choose just one prince but instead
wanted to be for everyone. With that, she leaped into the sea, disappearing into the waves.The
people were shocked and searched for her desperately but found nothing. After hours of
searching, they discovered colorful sea worms on the beach. King Tonjang Beru realized that his
daughter had transformed into these sea worms, which were then named Nyale.
