CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Online games is an inspiring world for the youth and for millennials starting from
Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, FIFA mobile to the latest and trending topic in the
gaming world, Mobile Legends. This kind of game is commonly found in different
places.
Mobile legends is a very popular game currently being played. This game is very
popular to adults and especially to young teenager like boys and even girls. It was
originally created by Moonton Shanghai and Mulong Network and Technology
Co.ltd. in China. It was first released in July 11, 2016. A total of 10 million accounts
are known to have downloaded this game on the Google play store.

The concept of this game where the two teams will fight and their goal is to destroy
the enemies base. This game needs teamwork and strategy. Every members in a
team need to have a good connection to each other and a right participation to get
what they want. Most of the students become addicted because of the ladder system
of Mobile Legends, as the player goes up, the more rewards and loot their earn. The
more power, runes, spell magics they have the stronger they appear on the game.
This kind of RPG is abundant to those students who want to be the king of the hill.

Many students downloaded it, mostly junior and senior high students. They
wanted to play it out of curiosity and want to follow the trend. It seems that this
game is really entertains the youth because of its unique genre. Through playing
online games they escape from the real world, they want to explore the gaming
world or as a part of their leisure time as well as this online game is entertaining but
it might be cause of destruction to time management of the students, that they will
give most of their attention on playing instead of studying their lessons, assignments
and projects, they will just play and focus to the game, while on the other hand, the
school works will be undone until the schooldays will passed

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Mobile legends is one of the most popular online game. This game can deal with
stress to the activities that we’re facing every day in school. It proves that this game
is really entertaining because of the number of students who download it. But
playing this over prior things is really a big problem. The goal of this study is to
answer the following questions.

1.Why students play mobile games?


1.1What are the positive impacts of mobile legends to the time management of
IMSHS student?
1. 2.What are the negative impacts of mobile legends to the time
management of IMSHS student?
2.How often do you play mobile legends?
2. 1.How mobile legends affect the time management of students?
3.What are those priorities that are affected while playing mobile legends?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study focus of how the mobile legend can affect the time management of the
selected IMSHS students. How this game can be a positive or negative impact to our
priorities. The most important thing that this study wants is to know what are the
solutions for the problems that playing mobile legends can give and how to have a
efficient time management for the selected players.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to know the effects of playing mobile legend to time
management of IMSHS students.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS


The respondents of this study are grade 11 students who played and have enough
experienced how to play this game. We conduct the study in IMSHS. The scope of
this study is from January 2019 until March 2019.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

These are the list of the unfamiliar words that the researcher used in this study.
This will the readers to understand the research.

Youth- the period between childhood and maturity

Millennials- a person who was born in the 1980s or 1990

Trending- something that is currently popular or fashionable

Popular- accepted, followed, used or done by many people.

Loot- something that is stolen and taken by force

Runes- any of the characters in the alphabet that were used in ancient times by
people of northern Europe.

Leisure- enjoyable activities that you do when you are not working

Entertaining- amusing and enjoyable.

Abundant- existing or occurring in large amounts.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter, the review related literature will help the readers to
understand the impact of mobile legends to time management.

Foreign literature

Mobile legends is like a MOBA online games with a combination of RTS (Real Time
Strategy) and RPG (Role Playing Game)where players run one character from group
opposite to the goal so that the opponent’s headquarters will destroy. Any character
that is played has a role with strength and weakness so prosecuted for cooperate
with team to win the game.

Mobile legend is very in demand due to a way to play is very smooth and how to
play a simple and lots of tutorials to play it when first establishing the game. Starting
from shooting and hitting, figuring out the right course of motion, using the skill,
gambling with other players, to how to buy items, furthermore via connecting with
Facebook or email ID so gamers can play collectively for work together to win the
game.

Local literature

The Filipino children of today’s generation have a different concept when it comes
in fun and games. The influence of globalization and Western popular culture has
brought about the acquisition of technology that caused the computerization or
digitalization of children’s games. Therefore, excitement that relies on these sort of
technology has turn out the monopoly of children from families who could
financially such as quality and mostly focused in urban areas.

Through the years numerous studies have been conducted in order to delve deeper
into the positive and negative effects of online gaming. One such take a look is of Liu

et.al(2009) so that the researchers integrated research toward problematic internet


use to examine cognitive and psychological predictors of our consequences related
with playing massively multiplayer online games (MMOG).

Foreign Literature

According to Wang, L.(2011) and Zhu, S.(2011) to there research entitled Online
Game Addiction Among University Student. Where conducted in Sweden. Who are
addicted in online game is have losing self control and social isolation. However they
are playing online games or MMOG because of their friends playing with same
games like based on Greene's theory which people who wants to join in common
network and they wanted to belong with others as well as the some online game are
attractive to gamers. However online game addiction was link in people who are
have problem in socializing to other people and also self control would commonly
becoming an MMOG or online game addict.

Local Literature

According to Dumrique,D.(2018) and Castillo,J.(2018) online game is one of the past


time activity of the young and adults nowadays. As well as people playing it have
reason to make fun, being relax, socialize to others and then also to be mentally
elusion from the real world.

However, they conducted a research entitled( Online Gaming: Impact on the


Academic Performance and Social Behavior of the Students in Polytechnic
University of the Philippines Laboratory High School) where they find that playing
online game cannot be influence and have a barrier in interacting to others as well
as they can be able to socialize effectively. While in terms to academic performance
of the respondent they find that they still have enough good grade even though they
play.

CHAPTER 3

METHODS OF RESEARCH

This chapter shows the procedure used by the researchers to prepare the needed
instruments and how to gather important information and data to answer the
questions in Chapter I. This includes the research design, respondents, sampling
technique, instrument used, construction and validation of the instruments used in
this study.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researcher used descriptive method in this research study. As Best and Khan
(2003) stated that the descriptive method of research is designed for current
existing conditions to gather information. This method helps the researcher find
specific information related to this study.

RESEARCH RESPONDENTS

The target population for this study are the grade 11 students of Ismael Mathay Sr.
High school, Project 8, Quezon, academic Year 2018-2019 who are playing Mobile
Legends. Since, this study only focuses to the students have enough experience on
playing Mobile Legend a fair of 14 students are the respondents for this study.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

In this study, researchers first used the cluster that belongs to the probability
sampling. Because the respondents are Grade 11 students of Ismael Mathay which
have different and tracks. The researchers divided the respondents into two groups
or cluster such as academic track and TVL track. Where there are 30 students that
will be involved and those 30 students is divided into 15 respondents per group.
However academic track in Ismael Mathay Sr. High have 3 strands such as ABM,
STEM and HUMSS. In TVL there are 4 strands which are the MARITIME, ICT, SMAW
and HE, but the researchers only needs 3 strands in TVL , so they used lottery
method also known as fishbowl to know which 3 strands will participate.
Researcher used a non-probability sampling, which is availability sampling where
the researcher asking in each strand who wanted to answer the survey.

INSTRUMENT USED IN THE STUDY

In this part the researchers will explain the details and methods that are used in
data gathering which is needed and used in order to solve the problems stated in the
study.

The researchers used questionnaires and had an interview with the subjects. The
questionnaires consist of items that determined the effects of online games to the
academic performance of the students. Close-ended questions are included in to the
questionnaires. The questions of this type of questionnaire are easy to code makes
them particularly useful when trying to prove the statistical significance of a
survey’s results to gather more accurate information the subjects are guided in
answering the questionnaires

CONSTRUCTION OF THE INSTRUMENT

The researchers got information and suggestions from some experts to have some
more ideas for their survey questionnaire. The questionnaires are easy to interpret
for the survey to their respondents. The researchers present the questionnaire to
their adviser before they give survey and make an interview for their selected
respondents.

VALIDATION OF THE INSTRUMENT

Before giving the questionnaires of the researcher to respondents, researcher


validate the work by first consulting there research adviser whether there is a
wrong content of question and wrong construction of grammar. Where to make sure
that questionnaire is appropriate for the study.

ADMINISTRATION AND RETRIEVAL OF THE INSTRUMENT

As the research teacher of the researcher verify the questionnaire the researchers
request approval to the principal, teacher and respondents to conduct a survey for
the research. The questionnaires will be distributed to the 5 selected respondents in
the academic and TVL track. The answers of the respondents will analyzed to get the
result for the research.

CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter discusses the presentation, analysis and interpretation of data that the
researchers gathered that needed in the study entitled the impacts of playing Mobile
Legends in time management of students in IMSHS in Selected Gr.11

The respondents already spoken based on their answers it show that most of the
selected grade 11 students play mobile legends every day. They stated that they play
it for an hour of more than that each day. The researchers let the respondents
compare their time spent for the past years and to present time. Half of them said
that they play it more often than before, in the second hand half of the respondents
said that the time their time spent on playing mobile legends was decreased.

There are so many possible behaviours that can change to the students because of
playing mobile legends. First it makes the students becomes lazy to do their school
works. Laziness hits them when they start playing mobile legends, because it truly
entertains them. Second the players becomes short-tempered. For some instances,
when someone interrupts a player while playing they will get easily mad and shout
because they are really affected to their lost of their game. Third it makes the
players increase their confidence. Lastly it teaches the players to be irresponsible.
They forgot to do their priorities such as school works, household chores, etc. and
because of lack of time management even they plan to do their requirements they
will already forget to accomplish it because of entertainment of ML.

Mobile legends affects the natural way of living of a student. First their imagination
had been bloom and getting wider that before. Once the mobile legends introduced
and played by a student it may affects their academic performance directly because
they are getting addicted playing it. The subjects said that the way they talk to their

friends had change. They are getting impulsive they can produce mix emotions so
sometimes they express their feelings via foul words.

A student said that he can balance his time for playing Mobile Legends and time for
doing his home works, that nothing will change when he playing it. But most of the
subjects said that once you playing, it will consume a lot of time. That your time for
doing school works will be shortened. One of the reasons is it really entertains each
player and they use it as a stress reliever. Addiction is also a reason, when they are
addicted to play, everything will be ruin specially their time management.

There are so many reasons why players started to reduce their time spent for
playing Mobile legends. First, they got negative effect to their grades. Second they
want to spent their time for studying. Third possible factor is, they can now manage
their time that they can set their prioritize, which thing should accomplish first and
not. Last thing why players lessen their time for playing is sometimes they choose to
spent more time for outdoor activities and to socialize to others

The researchers asked the respondents how they assure that they can insert playing
mobile legends. They said that they will only play it when they have free time. Also
managing the things that should do first and not. And be optimistic, if we know the
positive consequences after our actions we can assure that we can play mobile
legends.

The researchers asked their respondents that” if you were have a choice to stop
playing mobile legends will you do it?” most of the subjects answered no because
they are now addicted playing it. It’s now their hobby and they want to follow what
is the trending game right now. Few of the subjects said yes if it’s necessary and to
make their life good and comfortable.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY

This chapter aims to discover the impacts of playing mobile legends to time
management of the selected grade 11 students in IMSHS. The objective of this study
is to know the positive and negative effects of playing mobile legends in the students
who played this game.

The respondents of this study are grade 11 students of IMSHS both Academic and
TVL tracks. The researchers made a survey to choose their participants that have a
potential and credibility of being a respondent for this research study. The
respondents are selected carefully according to the criteria of the study. The
respondents in this study was interviewed by the researchers. The researchers give
options to the respondents on how they will answer the questions. The questions
that will be asked to the respondents are made objectively and easy to answer.

The researchers used qualitative research design to give emphasis and to know the
impacts of playing mobile legends on their time management of the grade 11
students of IMSHS.

CONCLUSION

Through playing online games it reduce the level of stress or anxiety due to
activities that are done.

Moontoon developed an online game and it is specifically design to escape the


real world. The game was named ‘’Mobile Legend: Bang Bang’’ thus game will helps
the gamer to enhance their critical thinking, multitasking skills, and being socially
active.
According to the answers of the respondents, the impacts of playing mobile
legends to the time management of grade 11 students are they spend most of their
time on the mobile phone, reduce the allotted time for doing home works, and
household chores.

The respondents prefer to use time in playing mobile legends, they would
use their allotted time to gain rank and to be stronger than other players. For other
players Mobile Legends do not help to improve their time management skills, they
play but they can control their selves in terms of anger and excitement to move to
the top.

RECOMMENDATION

Playing mobile legends is very popular among people in our modern time, 21th
century, especially in students. For them it is enjoyable and fun. This type of game
give them more confidence and friends.

However it’s also have negative effects. Player of mobile legends becomes
irresponsible in some manner. Student struggle with lack of interest for their
priorities in school and in households chores task. Mobile legends can also affects
the behaviour status of the students, they became aggressive when playing and
became lazy in doing their stuff, those things affects the time management of the
students. In order to resolve this dilemma, researchers recommend that student
should set a goal on what will do first before playing and prioritized what is
important than anything

For respondent’s recommendation they already spoken the best way to improve
time management skills is minimize the time spent for playing mobile legend, we
should always know our priorities and try to create our own ‘’list to do’’ so that we
will never forget to accomplish things and to manage our time properly.

Research is the highest form of study. It is important because it gives answers to


our questions and recommends possible solutions for our problems. Every
researcher needs a long time span to finish one research. so the researchers need to
have determination when doing it. We research group decided to make a research
that focus on what are the effects of playing mobile legends to time management of
the selected senior high school students in Ismael Mathay Sr. High School.

Our group experience difficulties when we are in process of gathering data for our
study. seriously, making a research title is very hard because our teacher keep on
analyzing and validating each research title that we created and after that all of it
was rejected. But for goodness sake our research teacher approved the title that we
proposed entitled “The Impacts of Playing Mobile Legends to Time Management of
the Selected Senior High School Students because many students nowadays are
playing mobile legends. Second the difficulty on paraphrasing, because when a
person is paraphrasing an information or statement they need to interpret it while it
must there is no change of meaning for each statement. Plagiarism is also one of the
problems, many researchers done it because it will lessen their stress or works.
Last the interpretation of gathered data, what if the researcher have no broad
imagination , he will be unable to finish that task. Those things are the problems that
our group faced.

English, can construct a good grammar structure and have a broad vocabulary.
Second you need to have a good data analysis skill, because in research most of the
chapters need to perform interpretation of statements and data, and also to make
your each statement longer. Third the researchers needs to be socialize and be
friendly so that it will be easy to them to communicate and approach every
respondents, teacher, etc . that can help them to their study. lastly is teamwork. our
group is not a perfect group but we can assure that we have a teamwork every time.
Every members cooperate and do their responsibility properly.

REFLECTION

In all chapters, all of us have a different task to do. All chapters are not easy to do
but we help each other to do this research study. All chapters are hard to do and we
met all difficulties when doing a research but we made it and we passed it. We had
group work at Angel's house and we divided the tasks in each of us to have a balance
tasks for all of us. Before we made all the chapters, we always talked to each other
for some suggestion and concept that we do to make every chapter of a research
study. After we finish the every chapters our adviser always checked our tasks if it’s
wrong or not. It is my first time to conduct and have a subject research but I’m
happy because we made it and we finish it. I always went to computer shop to do the
tasks that I need to do in our research study. Every chapters of research have
challenges and difficulties that we face before we made all chapters. I experienced
stress because it’s hard to do a research study for me. I sleep late in night because
the tasks that we need to do are needed to pass in time. I feel always tired even the
subject is not research, but I’m ready to know and explore a research study to have
more concepts and ideas for that subject. I have many things that I sacrifice when I
do a research paper like playing basketball and go out with my friends in outdoor
activities. But it’s worth it because we finished our research study in time. I know
being a student is hard but as a student we need to all tasks in our class and we need
to be industrious and patient most of all in research subject. I have many things that
I learned in research and I know that I need to be more active and industrious in our
class even the subject is not research. I’m thankful to Ma’am Cinco and my group
mates and also the participants that participate on our research study.

REFLECTION

Research is one of the difficult tasks I have ever encountered now in grade 11. It
needs a lot of patient and dedication by doing the whole research. At first our group
was so struggle with our research title, there so many revisions to our research title
done. It is so exhaustive but our group never give up thinking on our research title,
until our adviser approved one of our titles we have done. It feels so good when we
past the first trial of research it means we can move to chapters one to five. Chapters
have so many things to do like paraphrasing, researching quoting, citing, and etc.
That needed to make our research more reliable and justifiable. It is hard because
you have to surf online in the internet more often to search that related to our study,
how to do some chapters and communicating to our group mates to updates what is
happening to our research because sometimes we are not cooperating well.
Research leads as to have lack of sleep because we have to finish it on time. Hence, I
have learned that each of us have to be more responsible and focus in doing our task
and we should follow our leader all the time, because she/he knows what is the best
thing to make our research better and successful. Also I have learned how to
communicate in different people because of interviews and surveys we do. Lastly I
realized research was not a burden to make student happy and enjoy their life in
school but teach us to go out in our comfort zone and learn from it, even it is hard
sometimes as you do it with all your heart and mind. Completing this research study
was a very big achievement for us as a student researcher who are just beginning to
learn.

Research is a very difficult thing to do for me, luckily I belong to this group that has
lot of patience and determination to finish this job, the leader and the members are
responsible to the tasks that is given to each other, I was expecting a lot to the result
of our job, everyone on the group was able to handle such things in time and
effectively. My group mates does not want any members to be left behind so that we
are doing the job balanced and fast enough to gather data, it is difficult for me to see
that my group mates are suffering, I don’t want to see them suffer, sometimes I
blame myself if I am being left behind, but there is no time to blame, so that I am
doing my best to help them with everything I have, the research was about on how
does playing smartphones will affect time management, I am also a user and a
gamer. I think that it was an advantage for the group because there are questions
that I can answer and compare to the answers of the respondents; we have to work
hard to get the thing we want to get.

In doing such things like this, from the subject Research in Daily life 1—it
takes so much time. Considering that it has to be systematic, and having a discipline
to do such things is the factors that capable for the quality of being a researcher. I
believe that we researchers, as a group, had experienced so many hardships from
the very start. We dedicate our whole-heart effort and our knowledge just to do this.
Our group made a really investment from the very first part of the research, from
the chapter 1 up until we have reached the chapter 5. It was stressful, having those
sleepless times, shedding tears, and having misunderstanding times with my group
mates. Though, it was so hard, we manage to finish all those things that made us
more strong and we’re able to reach our unbelievable goal, to finish this study.
Thanks to our research teacher, and to my co-workers as a researcher, I truly
consider this as a best part of my life; to be able to finish this hard study.

There are things that I have learned on making this, having the courage and
the discipline. Team work makes the dream work. So keep believing on yourself,
because in the end, you’ll be able to reach the victory for doing the research.

Mr. Bantog was graduated high school with honor in Ismael Mathay Sr. High School
(IMSHS). He continue his senior high path on the same high school he was
graduated. He was enrolled as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
(STEM) student. He choose to be a STEM student he believe that there are many
opportunities in this strand. Someday he wanted to be a professional worker where
the skills are related to medicine path. Medicine course is his first choice because he
feel that helping other people in terms of their health needs is his role in life. His
second choice is to be a teacher, a science teacher perhaps. He is good in
communication, have a good quality, loud, and lively voice that can caught the
attention of others. Communication skill is his number one asset. He believes that he
is good speaker somehow. He is approachable and dedicated to his commitments,
focus in his study so that he can be a college student to a good university someday.
Someday he keep on hoping that he will be a successful and rich man. He wants to

help his parents and siblings to lift their lives from the average life to the upper

making in grade 9 and she won 3 rd place. She has a potential in making simple things
creative in her own imaginative way. She is also an honor student in first semester
and hoping to end her grade 11 with academic award. She never stops believing to
herself and she wanted to chase her dream to be an architect. Because she wanted to

Bernadette Naul was born on November 10, 2001, she is the only child of Francisco
and Rosalia Naul. She lives in Baesa, Quezon City with her parents. “Push yourself,
because no one else is going to do it for you”, that is her inspiring words which have
intensified her desire to be successful in life. She studied junior high at Ismael
Mathay Sr. High School. She received the following awards: Deportment Awardee
Modesty, with Honors who have attained a general average of 90%, Perfect
Attendance, Academic excellence award with Honors for having attained a general
weighted average of 92%. She continued her senior high at Ismael Mathay Sr. High
School and received an academic excellence award for having attained a general
average of 91% for First Semester.

She gave everything she can to be able to enter her dream university which is the
UP (University of the Philippines) where she wanted to finish college majoring
architecture. She wanted to design a houses for other people and for her family. She

He graduated high School in Culiat High School. Now, He is a senior high student in
Ismael Mathay Sr. High School, he is a STEM student. He is an active student, his
hardworking and industrious in their class, and he can do all tasks that you gave to
him. This man is a type of guy that ‘’Happy Go Lucky’’ because he do all things that
he want even it cause harm to himself but he is patient and responsible to the things
that he do. The course that he wants to take in college is Marine Engineering but
until now he don’t know what school he wants to go. He have many goals, but before
that he need to finish his study in able to achieve his goals because now is the start
of his journey to pursue his dreams. His inspirations are his family and God but his
cousin is the one who pushed him to be a marine engineer someday. His ambition is
to be a successful man like Bill Gates, Lucio Tan and Henry Sy, because he wants to
help his family in exchange for their help to me. According to him, all of us
encountered challenges but all challenges have ending. We need to do is to face it.

A student from Ismael Mathay Senior High School that belongs to STEM (science technology
engineering and mathematics) strand and already a mechanic at the age of 13, he was born
on november24, 1999 at Quezon city general hospital, Alboni M. Abid lives at Mendez street
Baesa Quezon City, and he already experience teaching higher school levels than him, he
became a part-time teacher at Villagers Montessori College when he studied there. Alboni
M. Abid is an active and hardworking student; he is a Muslim that believes in Allah, he
doesn’t want to bother anyone. Alboni M. Abid is aiming high to reach his goals, he doing
everything to become a good and disciplined civil engineer in the future, as he provide for
his family, friend and for himself he wants to gain a good career and a high income so that
he will not be a problem to others anymore. Alboni M. Abid wants to protect other people
than his self mostly to his family. He believes that even if you are at the peak of your
greatness, you should not stop, go get some rest if you are tired, regain strength then fight
again in this cruel world.
