Learning Task No. 3

1. What were the functions of myths and legends among early Filipinos?

The interpretation of reality, whether historical or cultural, is the myths and

legends most obvious function. In the past, myths and legends generally developed
out of the desire to explain things that people didn't know about or comprehend, such
as illness, mortality, passion, battle, customs, or catastrophic events like hurricanes
and landslides. Through the existence and deeds of gods, warriors, and other mythical
beings, Philippine mythology aims to explicate the world's natural phenomena. The
most of these tales were passed down orally and kept alive with the help of tribal
elders, healers, and religious figures.

In addition, myths and legends also shed light on the history and beliefs of the
locality. The local legends give us an idea of where they came from and where they
belong. Even if the tales may not be entirely accurate, they still aid in our
understanding of the past. One of the best examples is how several Filipino creation
myths emphasize the equality of men and women because both were made from the
same bamboo. The Filipinos will have a clear explanation of what occurred in the
distant past through myth and legend, which will also improve the narrative of our
history by imparting morals and values to the next generation.

2. List the forms of literature that were passed on by the early Filipinos to today’s
generation.

A. Proverbs - Usually written in rhyme, they are real-world observations and

ordinary life philosophy. It definitely aims to delight while imparting
fundamental knowledge necessary for surviving in the locality. These are
salawikain in Filipino.
B. Riddles - It is similar to proverbs, hence they call for an answer and are
employed to put the listener’s wits to the test. Riddles are typically employed
in a contest of wits where locals of all ages participate or watch to determine
who is the sharpest. The answer is more serious than you may think, even
though it seems to be talking about something silly.

C. Folksongs - These lovely tunes serve as authentic reflections of the events

that our ancestors had in life. These include songs about courtship, lullabies,
crops, burials, serenades for girls, and others.

D. Tales - Stories about how specific places, their identities, and their history
came to be. These also go by the names of myths and legends. They are
typically employed to explain particular occurrences or phenomena in the life
of our ancestors that cannot be explained by the constrained practical science
they were familiar with at the time.

E. Epics - It is a collection of protracted poetry about a hero and his exploits

and misfortunes. Typically, a male hero with superhuman skills and all the
desirable traits that our ancestors value in a person are born into these stories.

3. How much has changed from the way Filipinos lived before and the way we live
now?

Since their thought is centered on how they might become ethical humans by
their actions, I believe the Filipinos are more valuable than people today in terms of
their cultures and beliefs. Prior to the present, ethical principles dominated people's
thoughts. The majority of the younger generation is more concerned with social media
than with our history or even with verifying what actually occurred in the past.
Because technology has had a significant impact on how we used to spend our daily
lives, Filipinos' lives have significantly changed throughout the years. One of the
main forces behind societal progress, the Internet has altered industry, schools,
politics, health care, and even how we communicate with our loved ones, contrary to
earlier times that Filipinos physically carry out all activities and always focus to
strengthen our cultures and beliefs while valuing the morals and values.
