Guided Reading Program to Enhance the Reading Skills of Grade 5 Students at Acal Elementary School

in English, School Year 2023-2024”

Chapter 1: Introduction

Background of the Stydy:

Reading is a fundamental skill that plays a crucial role in a student’s academic

success and overall development. It serves as the foundation for learning in

various subjects and is essential for effective communication and

comprehension. However, many students face challenges in developing strong

reading skills, which can hinder their educational progress. According to research

by Smith and Jones (2019), strong reading skills are associated with improved

comprehension, critical thinking, and overall academic performance. Additionally,

studies by Johnson et al. (2020) have shown that students with proficient reading

skills are more likely to develop a lifelong love for reading and engage in

independent learning. Guided reading programs provide a structured approach to

reading instruction that focuses on individualized support and small group

interaction. According to research by Brown and Williams (2018), guided reading

programs offer opportunities for students to develop reading strategies, improve

fluency, and enhance comprehension skills. The work of Thompson and Davis

(2021) further emphasizes the importance of guided reading programs in

promoting active student engagement and fostering a positive reading

environment.
The guided reading program will focus on small-group instruction, tailored to

meet the individual needs of students at different reading levels. By grouping

students based on their reading abilities, teachers can provide targeted

instruction and support, ensuring that each student receives appropriate

challenges and opportunities for growth. The Implementation of the guided

reading program aligns with the school’s commitment to providing a

comprehensive and inclusive education for its students. By focusing on the

specific needs of Grade 5 students, the program aims to bridge any gaps in

reading skills and empower students to become confident and proficient readers.

The success of the guided reading program will be evaluated through ongoing

assessments, observations, and student feedback. These evaluations will help

identify areas of improvement and inform instructional decisions to ensure the

program’s effectiveness. By implementing a guided reading program, Acal

Elementary School aims to create a supportive and engaging learning

environment that fosters a lifelong love for reading among Grade 5 students. It is

hoped that this program will not only enhance their reading skills but also instill a

sense of curiosity, critical thinking, and a passion for learning.

Overview:

This research aims to benefit the selected grade level of Acal Elementary School

to further enhanced their reading abilities. The researchers will choose a

strategies to use to fulfill the goal and attain the given objectives of this research,

this follows the questions to be answered by this action research and also the

intervention that the researchers will use during the data gathering and analysis.

The data gathering and analysis will be conducted in Acal Elementary School

during our practice teaching, with the guide of our cooperating teachers and also

with the permission of the School Head of the School. The Intervention to be

used can be guide reading, technology based reading, independent reading and

etc. These interventions aim to enhance the reading skills of Grade 5 students at

Acal Elementary School in English by providing targeted instruction, fostering

independent reading habits, and involving parents in the learning process.

Rationale of the Research:

The researcher’s reason why we conduct this research is that we want to help

the students to enhance and improve their reading ability, this aims to benefit the

students and have a higher level of reading ability. In Acal Elementary School as

we observed together with my co- student teachers we found out that the

students are having difficulty in reading especially the Grade 5 level, we

developed this research title to help the students by choosing right strategies and

materials to enhance their reading ability. It is because reading is one of the most

important ability to build a students mind, According to a research “Reading is an

exercise for the mind. It helps kids calm down and relax, opening doors of new

knowledge to enlighten their minds. Kids who read grow up to have better

cognitive skills.” It improves, focus, develops expressions and emotions, helps

students to socialize and many other benefits.

Reading books also reduces stress, helps you sleep better, improves health,

develops your imagination and above all: it is just fun to do.

Reading has a tremendous effect in fueling all aspects of our personality and

enhancing our linguistic prowess. In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the

entirety of human life depends on it. Whatever we grow up to become in our

lives, no matter where we stand, reading has somehow shaped it.

Research Questions:

These questions will be answered through out the conduction of our research.

- What are the current reading levels in Reading English of Grade 5 students at

Acal Elementary School?

- How did the Guided Reading Program enhance the Reading Skills of the

Students?

- What are the recommendations or adjustments to use to further enhance the

effectiveness of Guided Reading Program in enhancing the reading skills of

Grade 5 students of Acal Elementary School?

Objectives of the study:

These objectives are the learning goals of this research, this would be testified once this

research is conducted.

This study aims to:

1. Identify effective reading strategies to enhance Grade 5 pupils reading

skills.

2. Implement a comprehensive reading program tailored to the needs of the

pupils.

3. Suggest ways/ strategies to enhance the Reading skills of the pupils.

Significance of the Study

This Study is deemed important to:

 Students/Pupils - A successful guided reading program can boost students'

confidence in their reading abilities. As students progress through leveled texts

and experience success, they develop a sense of accomplishment and

motivation to continue reading. Increased engagement in reading can lead to a

lifelong love for learning and exploration.

 Parent - The guided reading program provides an opportunity for parents to be

actively involved in their child’s reading development. Parents can support their

children by engaging in reading activities at home, monitoring progress, and

fostering a reading-friendly environment.

 School - Implementing a guided reading program aligns with Acal Elementary

School’s commitment to providing quality education and continuous

improvement. The program’s success can contribute to positive outcomes in

student achievement, increased reading proficiency, and an overall improvement

in the school’s academic performance.

 Researchers – The outcome of this study is a potentially good reference for the

next researchers that will try to study also about this research, or related to this

research.
Intervention

This research will implement a Guided Reading Program to enhance the Reading Skills of Grade

5 Pupils of Acal Elementary School in English, the plan steps below will be observed:

1. Assess the current reading levels - Begin by assessing the reading levels of the Grade 5

students at Acal Elementary School. This will help you identify their strengths and areas

for improvement.

2. Set clear goals: Determine the specific reading skills you want to target through the

intervention. We are going to focus on improving comprehension of the pupils.

3. Select appropriate reading materials - The researchers will use a improvised Guided

Reading Materials to further give a good motivation for the children to be more eager in.

reading, we are going to use a Springboards, PowerPoint Presentations or Video Plays

that will help them active in reading.

4. Create a structured program: Develop a structured program that includes guided reading

sessions, independent reading time, and small group activities. Incorporate strategies

such as pre-reading discussions, vocabulary building exercises, and post-reading

comprehension activities.

5. Provide individualized support: Tailor the intervention to meet the specific needs of each

student. Offer additional support to struggling readers through one-on-one sessions or

differentiated instruction. Progress to track their growth and identify areas that may
require additional support. Use formative assessments and ongoing observations to

gather data on their reading skills.

6. Collaborate with teachers and parents: Work closely with Grade 5 teachers and parents

to ensure consistency and support. Share progress reports, provide resources, and

encourage parental involvement in fostering a reading-friendly environment at home.

7. Celebrate achievements: Recognize and celebrate the students’ achievements

throughout the intervention. This can boost their motivation and create a positive

learning environment.
