Basic LAN Configuration

LAN Concepts:
 LAN means Local Area Network.
 LAN means process of providing network communication between
the hosts or devices within a building or around 1km distance by
establishing physical connectivity and configuring the IP address,
gateway, domain or workgroup and firewall settings.
 LAN is possible for single network only.
 LAN covers maximum up to 1 km distance (Within a Building).

LAN Components:
1. Switches Used to link different hosts in same network by
using MAC Address.
2. Hubs Used to link different hosts in same network by
using broadcast address.
3. Repeaters Used to link different hosts in same network at
various frequency/ bandwidth.
4. Server Used to link, control & secure the different
hosts in same network by using broadcast
address & available services and security policies.

LAN Configuration:
1. Establishing Physical Connection:
a) For Client- Client Communication:
 Establish a Physical LAN connection b/w Client PC's
through Switches & Straight through LAN Cables.
(OR)
b) For Server- Client Communication:
Establish a Physical LAN connection b/w Server PC and Server
through Switches & Straight through LAN Cables (or) directly
connect Server PC with Server

2. IP Configuration:

c) For Client- Client Communication:


 My network------------->Properties----------->Change adapter
settings---------> Properties--------->Select IP
Version------------>Properties------------>Enter IP address,
Subnet mask, default gateway address in same range of ip-----
> ok
(OR)
 Go to run------------->ncpa.cpl----------->LAN settings---------
>Properties-------> Select IP Version------------>
Properties------------>Enter IP address, Subnet mask, default
gateway address in same range of ip ---------> ok

d) For Server- Client Communication:


 My network------------->Properties----------->Change adapter
settings---------> Properties--------->Select IP
Version------------>Properties------------>Enter IP address,
Subnet mask, default gateway address in same range of server
ip-----> ok

 Go to run------------->ncpa.cpl----------->LAN settings---------
>Properties-------> Select IP Version------------>
Properties------------>Enter IP address, Subnet mask, default
gateway address in same range of server ip ---------> ok
