Use the be-verbs (am, is, are was, were)
correctly in sentences
Target

This module will help you use be verbs (is, are, am, was
and were) correctly in sentences. The scope of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations.
The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary
level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the
standard sequence of the course. But the order in which
you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.

knowledge on be verb is. are am, was and were)

Direction: Study the picture and answer the questions

Rina: My teacher is coming for a visit today.
Liza: Oh, really? Did you do something wrong in
school?
Rina: No. The principal asked her to see my vegetable
garden.
Liza: Right. The principal has a project call Clean and
Green
Rina: This project is not only for us, pupils. My mother
was so happy to see me clean our yard and
plant vegetables.
Liza: Your garden has grown in a few days’ time. It’s
beautiful.
Rina: Thanks. Oh, Mrs. Mariano is coming.
Liza: Let me show her your garden
Liza and Rina: Good morning Mrs. Mariano, we are
happy to see you.
Mrs. Mariano: Good morning Liza and Rina. I am happy
to see you too.

Read the sentences about the dialog


Note the italicized words.
1. Mrs. Mariano is Rina’s Teacher.

What word comes after Mrs. Mariano? How about She?


Is and was are words that tell about being. They come
after singular nouns.

Which sentences tell about present time? Past time? What


words of being are use in these sentences?

Remember
Is and was are used with singular subjects, while
are and were are used with plural subjects
The words am, is and are are used in the present
tense of the verb. To show an action in the past,
was and were are used.
