suitable and livable for people in those times than they are now.
What problems will this cause?
What can be done to solve these problems?
At present, there exist several towns and cities which were constructed ages ago. In
the past, these were considered livable places but now they are struggling to meet
the needs of the people living there. In this essay, I will discuss the problems and
recommend a few solutions to improve the situation.
To begin with, old towns and cities played a great role during the 19th and 20th
centuries, but today high-rise buildings and bungalows have changed the living
lifestyle of people. People are struggling to live in such cities and towns because of
poor waste management, sewage systems, narrow roads, and other infrastructure
facilities. Their design structure is creating problems for people living there. For
instance, in Mumbai there are several old towns and cities where the roads available
for walking and transport purposes are the same, this further results in chaos and a
lot of public and vehicle traffic. Secondly, the problem of filling water also increases,
which affects the cities severely, leading to clogged and damaged roads.
It is known that with the growth of developing nations, the number of car users is
increasing, which is becoming an issue that needs to be talked about. The essay
would showcase the problems and provide solutions to them.
To begin with, the growth and development of developing countries have resulted in
a change in the demand and needs of the people. Earlier these impoverished
countries that provided basic facilities to their public, are now in a position where
they need to fulfill their public demands. This means that with the rise in disposable
income of the middle-class section of society, they have shifted towards private
modes of transport. The problem situated with this is that the roads in developing
nations are narrow and with the advent of private transport, traffic on the roads
increases. For example, a 2017 report on automobile purchases in Vietnam stated a
17% rise compared to the years 2015-16.
To fully address this problem, there are two potential fixes that the government can
apply. Firstly, the higher-ups must impose high taxes on purchases of cars which can
deter buyers. This policy was implemented in Singapore and as a result, purchases
made by residents had decreased over time. Another alternative can be making the
public aware of different modes of travel through awareness campaigns. This
solution can help in reducing traffic and also noise and air pollution in a country.
