My time serving at the rural health units (RHUs) in Sta. Barbara and Zarraga was a
transformative experience that profoundly impacted my perspective on healthcare and
my future in medicine. It was a journey filled with invaluable lessons, heartwarming
connections, and a deeper understanding of the unique challenges and rewards of
serving in rural communities.

Sta. Barbara RHU: A Tapestry of Friendship and Learning

My initial foray into the world of rural healthcare began at the Sta. Barbara RHU.
Stepping into the unit, I was immediately welcomed by the warmth and camaraderie of
the staff. I formed a close bond with the post graduate interns and the other healthcare
workers, learning from their expertise and witnessing their dedication to serving the
community. Their passion and commitment to patient care inspired me and solidified
my desire to pursue a career that directly impacts people's lives.

One of the most unforgettable experiences at Sta. Barbara was the opportunity
to learn under the guidance of Dr. Sucaldito. His teaching style was engaging and
insightful, fostering a deep understanding of clinical practices and the complexities of
rural healthcare. He challenged me to think critically, analyze situations, and approach
patients with empathy and compassion. His mentorship instilled in me the importance
of lifelong learning and a patient-centered approach to medicine.

Working at the RHU provided a stark contrast to my previous experiences in

hospital settings. The limited resources and diverse patient population demanded a
different approach to patient care. It involved resourcefulness, adaptability, and a
willingness to go beyond traditional medical practices to address the community's
specific needs. This exposure broadened my understanding of healthcare delivery and
highlighted the importance of preventive and community-based interventions.

Beyond the technical aspects of medicine, my time at Sta. Barbara opened my

eyes to the diverse career paths available within the medical field. Witnessing the
impact of public health initiatives and the dedication of the PGI and other healthcare
workers sparked an interest in exploring preventive and community-oriented aspects of
medicine. This realization helped me refine my aspirations and chart a course for my
future career.

Zarraga RHU: A Wellspring of Mentorship and Cultural Immersion

My journey continued at the Zarraga RHU, where I was fortunate to experience

the invaluable mentorship of Dr. Bundoc. Her guidance went beyond clinical expertise;
she instilled in me the importance of cultural sensitivity, effective communication, and
building trust with patients. She emphasized the need to understand the social
determinants of health and tailor care approaches to the unique needs of the
community.

Dr. Bundoc's advice resonated deeply with me. She encouraged me to pursue a
career path that aligns with my values and allows me to make a meaningful contribution
to society. Her words resonated with the growing desire I had developed in Sta. Barbara
to explore a path in emergency medicine.

The Zarraga RHU wasn't just a workplace; it was a window into the vibrant
culture of the town. The warmth of the people, the delicious local cuisine, and the
unique traditions enriched my experience beyond measure. Witnessing the resilience
and spirit of the community further solidified my commitment to serving those in need,
particularly in underserved areas.

A Transformation: Embracing the Call to Serve

My service at the rural health units was a transformative experience that

reshaped my perspective on healthcare and my aspirations for the future. It instilled in
me the values of empathy, adaptability, and a commitment to serving the community. I
learned the importance of preventive and community-based approaches to healthcare,
and I discovered a passion for working with underserved populations.

The friendships I forged, the invaluable mentorship I received, and the profound
impact of the communities I served will forever be etched in my memory. This journey
has equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and most importantly, the heart to pursue
a career path that allows me to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of others,
particularly in rural communities.

As I move forward, I carry these experiences as a source of inspiration and

guidance. I am now more determined than ever to pursue a career in medicine that
aligns with my values and allows me to make a positive impact on the lives of those who
need it most.
