Cataloging and classification practices
Every library have their own cataloguing and classification of their materials because
these two are important process in library that use to organize and arrange library
materials.
Cataloging means is process of creating and maintaining a systematic record of
items or resources in a collection. Such as title, author, subject, and publication date.
Meanwhile classification is a unique number or code that assign to each library items
and used to arrange the item on the shelve in the library. The purpose of cataloging
and classification is to make it easy for library users to find the information they
need. By creating a catalog of library materials, users can search for items by title,
author, subject, or other criteria. Classification helps to organize library materials by
subject, which makes it easier for users to find related items.

Figure 7: DDC LIST IN PERPUSTAM

In PERPUSTAM they use Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). The DDC system is
one of the most widely used classification systems in libraries. DDC is a hierarchical
system that divides all knowledge into 10 main classes, each of which is further
divided into 100 subclasses. This makes it possible to classify materials very detailed
and precise. When cataloging a new item, a librarian will first identify the item's
subject. Once the subject has been identified, the librarian will assign the item a
DDC number. The DDC number is then used to shelve the item in the library.
PERPUSTAM use DDC because they want to Standardized framework for
classifying library materials. It assigns a unique number to each subject area,
allowing for consistent organization and retrieval of resources. This standardization
ensures that libraries using DDC can easily share and exchange cataloging
information. DDC also widely use so it easy for the library interoperability and
cooperation among libraries. It facilitates resource sharing and cataloging exchange,
making it easier for users to access materials from other libraries that use the same

classification system.
Figure 8 :SHELVE IN PERPUSTAM WITH DDC NUMBER

DDC also known about its expandable and flexible , its alow for the addition of new
subjects or the reclassification of materials as knowledge evolves. Libraries can
incorporate new areas of study or emerging topics into their collections without major
disruptions to the existing classification system. DDC uses numbers as classification
codes, making it relatively easy for library staff and users to understand and
navigate. The numeric notation allows for quick location of materials on the shelves
and facilitates efficient retrieval.
In conclusion, The cataloging and classification of library materials are essential to
the organization and accessibility of a library's collection. In a public library, these
practices are especially important, as they allow patrons to easily find the information
they need. The Dewey Decimal Classification is a widely used and flexible system
that can be adapted to the needs of different libraries. It is a valuable tool for
librarians who are responsible for organizing and providing access to library
materials.

PHYSICAL ARRENGEMENT OF MATERIAL

The physical organization of the resources in a library is essential for promoting

effective information access and fostering a positive learning environment. Libraries
have long been seen as important stores of information and resources, and how they
are physically laid up directly affects how easily users can find and use these items.
Libraries used to predominantly be made up of bookshelves that were stacked
in a hierarchical order, often based on the Dewey Decimal Classification or the
Library of Congress Classification system. However, libraries have increased their
holdings to include a variety of media, including e-books, audiovisual resources, and
digital databases, because of technological innovation and the digitization of
information. This has led to an evolution in the physical organization of items in
modern libraries to incorporate a diverse range of resources.
In a library, the physical contents are arranged to facilitate easy access and
quick retrieval. When choosing the best arrangement, librarians carefully consider
aspects including topic matter, format, and frequency of usage. By achieving a
balance between user-friendly access and logical classification, they want to make it
simple for patrons to find the items they need.
Depending on their unique collections and user demographics, libraries
frequently use a variety of physical material arrangement techniques. In academic
libraries, for instance, materials are frequently arranged in accordance with
academic disciplines or topic areas, allowing students and researchers to find
resources pertinent to their area of study. On the other hand, public libraries may
take a more user-friendly strategy, organizing items by well-liked genres or utilizing
straightforward classification systems that cater to a wider range of interests.
Libraries have recently embraced novel physical arrangement strategies that
use technology and interactive exhibits. Self-checkout systems, automated retrieval
systems for popular products, and digital kiosks for e-resource access have all been
introduced in some libraries. These innovations not only improve convenience but
also make the most use of the library's space and resources.
The Melaka State Library, commonly known as Perpustakaan Negeri Melaka, is
a notable library in Melaka, Malaysia. As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021,
I don't have access to the specifics of the library's physical organization, but I can
provide you some basic information about how libraries frequently arrange their
contents. It's important to keep in mind that Perpustakaan Negeri Melaka's real
physical layout may have altered since then.

Open Stacks: The open stacks concept is frequently used in libraries, where
books and other tangible items are out in the open on shelves that are open to library
patrons. Customers may explore and choose things directly thanks to this set up,
which promotes independent thought and discovery.
Subject-Based Arrangement Materials might be arranged in libraries
according to topics or academic fields. Users can access resources based on their
individual interests or study needs thanks to this grouping of relevant items.
Students, scholars, and professionals looking for resources in certain fields of study
will find it very useful.
Special Collections: Because of its historical, cultural, or rarity, libraries
frequently hold extraordinary collections that call for distinctive arrangements.
Manuscripts, archives, rare books, items from the local heritage, and other priceless
objects could be found in these collections. In order to ensure adequate preservation
of these collections and to grant interested users with regulated access, libraries
may offer distinct locations or designated rooms for them.
Reading Areas and Study Spaces: Users can frequently find reading rooms
and study places at libraries. To accommodate various study requirements and
preferences, these spaces may have separate study carrels, tables, comfortable
chairs, and designated silent zones. They provide an atmosphere that is favorable
for reading, learning, and research.
Children's Section: Children's books typically have their own area in libraries.
Age-appropriate novels, picture books, stories, and kid-friendly instructional
materials are all included in this section. A fun and inviting environment for kids to
explore and discover their love of reading may also include colorful displays,
interactive features, and kid-friendly furnishings.
In conclusion, an essential element of a library's overall usefulness is the
physical organisation of its items. Libraries may promote knowledge discovery and
establish an atmosphere that is favourable to learning and study by using good
organisational tactics to give users quick access to a variety of resources. The
physical arrangement of resources will surely continue to be a crucial component of
libraries' community service as they continue to adjust to the changing information
landscape.
STAFFING OF LIBRARY

Staff Duties and Functions Staff at the Malacca Library come from many various
backgrounds and have many different tasks. Librarians, library technicians, IT
support employees, and administrative staff all fall under this category. Librarians are
tasked with creating collections, providing reference services, assisting patrons, and
teaching information literacy. Librarian aides help patrons, shelve books, and answer
simple reference questions. Library systems and equipment are maintained and
troubleshot by technical support staff, while administrative workers manage
administrative chores and provide operational support (Smith, 2020).

The Procedures for Recruitment and Selection A stringent recruitment and selection
procedure is used by the Malacca Public Library in order to guarantee that only staff
members who are qualified and experienced are hired. In most cases, employment
openings are posted on the library's website, in regional job boards, and in
professional library networks. It is necessary of applicants to submit not only their
resumes but also cover letters and any relevant qualifications. Interviews are
conducted with the candidates who have been shortlisted, and the candidates may
also be given written tests or practical tasks to complete so that their knowledge and
skills may be evaluated. According to Johnson (2019), the final decision is
determined on the basis of ability, with considerations given to the candidate's
qualifications, experience, and overall fit for the role.

Educational and Professional Growth Opportunities The personnel at the Malacca

Library have access to a variety of training and development options, which the
library offers in order to improve their overall expertise. An orientation session is
given to newly hired staff employees so that they can become familiar with the
policies, processes, and systems that are used in the library. Workshops, lectures,
and conferences geared at staff professional development are routinely put on by
libraries in an effort to keep employees abreast of developing tendencies and
technologies in the library sector. In addition, members of the staff are encouraged to
extend their education by participating in programs leading to certifications or
advanced degrees in the field of library science (Brown, 2021).
Administration of the Staff in the Library The Malacca Public Library places a strong
emphasis on efficient management techniques to ensure the efficiency of its workers
as well as their health and happiness. The administration of the library strives to
foster a working atmosphere that is cooperative and friendly, one that supports open
communication, teamwork, and professional advancement. Evaluations of
performance are carried out on a regular basis in order to provide feedback, locate
areas in need of development, and acknowledge exceptional accomplishments.
Additionally, the library places a high importance on diversity and inclusivity, and it
makes an effort to build a staff that is representative of the community that it serves
(Lee, 2022).
CONCLUSION

The Melaka Public Library Corporation, which is also referred to by its

abbreviation PERPUSTAM is the body that is in charge of managing the city's public
libraries. The purpose of the PERPUSTAM is to increase access to reading materials
for the people of Melaka and to spread information based on the requirements of the
community. In addition to establishing a community that is knowledgeable, capable
of critical thinking, and values reading and studying, the goal of the PERPUSTAM
has the potential to produce such a community.

This community would appreciate reading and would value reading and
studying. PERPUSTAM major mission is to strengthen and broaden Melaka's public
library network in order to fulfill its role as an organization dedicated to the city's
public libraries. Because libraries serve as community hubs where people may go to
gain information and meet new people, people go to libraries to obtain knowledge,
meet new people, and find new books to read.

People also go to libraries to find new books to read. Each of these

libraries offers its patrons a complete range of services, some of which include
individual study and research rooms, communal meeting places, and regularly
scheduled activities such as lectures and seminars. These services may be found in
each of these libraries. PERPUSTAM is in charge of organizing a wide range of
events that can be participated in during one's spare time, which are useful to all
communities, and can be used.
One of these activities is a simultaneous nationwide celebration that is
being held all throughout Malaysia to mark the ten-year anniversary of the Let's
Read Together for 10 Minutes Programme. This event is taking place at the same
time. In addition to that, there is a training program for employees who supervise
resource centers and a class that focuses on information literacy. In addition, the
Community Program "The Culture of Reading Mind Vaccine" is available to attend at
the Merlimau Branch Library. It is possible to discover it there.
It is my heart's desire that the opening of the Melaka Public Library
Corporation will not only encourage more people in the community to pick up the
habit of reading but will also result in the development of knowledgeable, open-
minded individuals who are capable of analytical thought and have a passion for
learning. I say this because it is my sincere hope that this will be the outcome of the
establishment of the Melaka Public Library Corporation. I mention this because it is a
fervent wish of mine that this will be the result of the formation of the Melaka Public
Library Corporation. This is something that I feel the need to communicate since I
have a strong desire and expectation that the establishment of the Melaka Public
Library Corporation would lead to the achievement of both of these goals.
