Background of the study

“Undernutrition is a deficiency of calories or of one or more essential nutrients(Jhon

E. Morley, 2022).”A person’s inability to get or prepare food, a disorder that makes
consuming or digesting food challenging, or a significantly increased need for calories
can all contribute to undernutrition.
Students who do not take enough of some essential nutrients, such as calcium,
potassium, and vitamin C, may not be able to perform at their best academically
(Nabarro et al. 2012).Many students don’t eat in time and skip breakfast because school
starts early around 6:40 a.m.Without a doubt, therefore, undernutrition is a recurring
problem for many individuals which will negatively affect the academic success.
Hence,it is precisely in this context that the researcher aim to identify which students
are having difficulty in academics because of nutritional deficiency. The researcher
believe that the health of the students was important and this study would have
contribution in the school to prepare for the GULAYAN SA PAARALAN or to make the
GULAYAN SA PAARALAN sustainable to feed the undernourish students in our school.
The researcher argue that there is need to determine the health status of the students
For the brain to function properly, one must consume enough and good nourishment
(Bloom,Shariff, Bond, & Johnson, 2000; Dauncey, 2009; Kazal, 2002; and others.
Moreover, optimizing brain function is a key component in gaining the necessary
cognitive ability, such as the capacity to learning’s concentration, comprehension,
assessment, and application (Kretchmer, Beard, Carlson,Schmitt, 2010; 1996).This
theory holds that the students who followed a healthy diet consisting of “fruits,
vegetables, grains, dietary fiber, protein, iron, calcium, and vitamin C” did better in
school and had a lower likelihood of failing a literacy exam. On the other hand, students
with poor diets were more likely to perform poorly on exams. This theories connect to
this study because it shows how would Grade 10 students of CHSEC will be healthier
as a result of better nutrition, which will likely result in fewer absences and more
frequent attendance.
