Marie Curie
Marie Curie is known as the mother of modern physics. She was the
first woman scientist and the first woman to be awarded the PhD and also
to win the Nobel Prize. Marie Sklodowska Curie was born in Warsaw,
Poland on November, 1867. Both of her parents were teachers.
She began the university studies and the scientific work in Warsaw
in 1890. Marie moved to France in 1891. There, she studied mathematics
at the Sorbone, an important French university; she graduated from it in
1894.
In Paris, she met Pierre Curie who worked there as a professor. The
two scientists married in 1895. Together, Marie and Pierre worked on
scientific research. They discovered many new elements such as: Radium
and its property, radioactivity... In 1903, Marie and Pierre with another
scientist shared the Nobel Prize for chemistry.
Pierre died in an accident on the streets of Paris in 1906. Marie was
sad, but she continued her work. She was awarded again the Nobel Prize
for physics in 1911. She created X-ray machines. She was the first person
to win two awards in different sciences. Marie died on July, 1934 in Paris.
She died of radiation poisoning.
