INTRODUCTION
The worlds of art and fashion are drawing ever
closer, with events such as Frieze Art Fair and
Miami Art Basel becoming significant milestones for
fashion as well as art. A transseasonal theme, this
story has a spring in its step, as colour is
heightened to bring an intense bundle of energy to
the scene. Playing with expectations, Offbeat is
also creative, immersive and interactive; it wants to
appeal, intrigue and delight with stimulating
designs that reawaken the senses.

This season, condensed colour packs a refined punch. Jumping from tomato red to sour green, this palette has an
unexpected element to it, as unlikely tones are paired in an unusually sophisticated way.

Bold Vision
Three-dimensional designs are coming through in prints and graphics this
season. Created through colour and shading, bold blocks, shapes and
stripes protrude with three-dimensional volume. Rory MacArthur’s
paintings (which look more like prints) are pumped with bold shapes and
bright colour, giving the appearance of vivid digital-style jigsaw prints.

Disruptive Patterns
Design drops a curveball in among well-ordered, controlled
patterns and prints. Disjointing and disrupting the rhythm of
consistency, designers release playful glitches into the mix.
Upsetting the regimented patterns via painterly scribbles and
graffiti spray also surprises and delights, adding an element of
the unplanned, untitled and impromptu.

Light Art
Design is drawn to light and the immersive quality it affords. Merging light and jewellery together, Sarah Angold
creates sculptural statement pieces that look like pieces of art. Same goes for Japanese millinery designer Maiko
Takeda, whose spectacular headpieces covered in acetate bristles glow in the dark. This injection of light not only
brings a futuristic touch, but also plays with perception and alters perspective for a sense of the immersive.

Optical Illusions
Through the use of colour, enhanced texture and
shaded effects, surfaces take on a three-dimensional
holographic quality. Manish Arora translates this into
fashion design with his gleaming 3-D eye motif
emblazoned on the front of one of his S/S 15
dresses, while Santiago Taccetti, fascinated by the
unpredictable reaction of different materials, creates
a crumpled type of opalescence using enamel on
pre-engineered rocks.

Rainbow Boho
The hippy, trippy feel behind this season’s story derives from a psychedelic mix of
art and culture. Influential artists driving this fashion movement are Shae Detar and
Minna Gilligan. The former creates these otherworldly photographic prints as she
transports her subjects out of reality and into her ethereal world; the latter, also an
influencer of ours, works with spray paint, ballpoint pens and cutouts to build an
offbeat cornucopia of psychedelic imagery.

Psychedelic Surfaces
Surface texture ups the ante this season, playing on
extremes for an enhanced design repertoire. For A/W
14/15, Peter Pilotto goes beyond the saturated prints and
colour combinations that have contributed to his career
thus far, creating multi-textured silhouettes brimming with
abstract, expressive energy. Working with Tai Ping,
CCKW also piles wool, flax, bamboo and silk together to
create an unusual carpet, inspired by a mad medley of
things ranging from topographic maps and tree rings to
cells and even meat.

Strange Beauty
Beauty looks turn strange and playfully offbeat. Impelled by the striking
intensity used in Jenny Morgan’s new style of portraiture, beauty opts for
strong, concentrated color. Make-up artist and body painter Isamaya Ffrench is
transforming the beauty industry as she goes beyond the senses, approaching
skin as a canvas for outlet and expression. Rodarte’s rainbow-coloured hair
also alludes to Offbeat’s appetite for the daring and dreamlike.

Poster Art
Punk collage and Absurdist art inspire poster-style prints and
graphics. Moving away from the Photoshop era to an aesthetic
more in line with the 1980s, designers employ painterly graphics
and hand-scrawled fonts. Linda Linko offers great go-to ideas for
rough hand-drawn fonts and textured edges, while Barney Bubbles,
a pioneer of British graphics, remains a powerful influence due to
the fun and dynamic nature of his radical designs.

Urban Checks
Americana golf checks and TV host jackets are made cool. Slightly novel but used in a
much sharper way, subverted urban checks make a bold statement and introduce a
different, cooler take on preppy. These aren’t put-together checks, though; there’s a
slack and relaxed slant to this, as demonstrated by Rubchinsksiy’s checked wool
outerwear and the matching jacket and trouser set from Backhash.

Neon Noir
Inspired by off-grid raves, underground dance floors and hidden city
corners, street and sport meet again for an urban, subterranean feel. Here,
smoky brights pierce the darkness, creating an intriguing and enticing neon
noir effect. The Infrared Croc is an outstanding colourway from Nike that
demonstrates the power of pairing black crocodile leather with infrared
colour. CuteCircuit also motivates this neon noir trend with its wearable LED
surface that lights up black backgrounds with dynamic colour.

Odd Compositions
Inquisitive and curious by nature, this season has a daring sense of
adventure as it playfully pushes designs to the extremes. Collars are
doubled up, teasing the senses, while Y-3’s Kanga sneakers look like
abstract sculptures with their paste-up surface, clashing textures and
jagged shapes. Italian-born, London-based Lorenzo Vitturi also
captures the odd and edgy dynamism of this theme through his
stunning colour-saturated vegetable sculptures that were designed
with vibrant Dalston’s Ridley Road Market in mind.

Back to Art School
A twisted update on preppy, this thrown-together styling thrives on
the creativity of individual flourishes. It is also vintage, but not in a
heritage sense; this is carefully selected and considered vintage
done in an arty, imaginative way. Despite its thrown-on attitude, it is
sophisticated on closer inspection with clever detailing and offbeat
styling subverting classic looks.

1970s/1980s New York
The late 1970s and early 1980s scene in New York
City was a melting pot of music and art. An
emerging creative energy was bubbling to the
fore, as different elements were pooled together in
an unpredictable, unforeseen way. Today, fashion
returns to the thriving dynamism of this time,
enticed by the subverted style, emerging hip-hop
culture and influential graffiti artists that took New
York by storm.

Street Smart
Sportswear and tailoring come together for a new fusion, as sport
references and original classics bridge back to a slightly active-
retro past. An element of toughness is added with helmets (Casely-
Hayford) and puffa jackets (adidas), while team jerseys turn into
cardigans and classic sport stripes are placed in a sartorial setting
for a fresh take on street-smart tailoring.

Young Tailoring
Updated 1980s suit silhouettes rise to stardom this season. They feature a
looser fit, relaxed style and more casual, boyish take on tailoring. The suit of
the season is extremely versatile, able to adapt and adjust, which gives it a
bit of a lived-in look and thrifty feel. The American artist, musician and
producer Jean-Michel Basquiat, who played a big part in New York’s creative
art scene during the late 1970s, inspires this new take on youthful tailoring.

Odd colour and pattern mixes explore optical effects and virtual texture in this playful, art-house design approach. Fine off-register stripes, textural jacquards,
overprinted tweeds and modular sportif constructions play together for lively graphic and tactile updates.
