VISITING INDIA
1. With a population of over one billion India is a country which contains a smorgasbord of places
to visit, meals to eat and things to do, so planning a trip could at first seem a little overwhelming. Therefore, to
help the box tickers among us perhaps it would be easier to start at the beginning, with the letter A.
2. A is for Agra, the smallish city in Northern India that welcomes millions of tourists every year,
and why do so many of them flock there? The Taj Mahal. Easily one of the most recognisable buildings in the
world, the Taj Mahal was built between 1631 and 1648 in memory of the favourite wife of emperor Shah Jahan.
The exterior of the building is made of pure marble with various gemstones set in the stone to add beauty and
elegance while the interior contains monuments to both Jahan and his late wife.
3. B is for Bombay or Mumbai to some, a city with two names and so much more in between. It’s
a city where one cannot get bored, so why not start with a bit of culture by visiting Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO
Heritage site. History buffs will love the caves as they date back as far as the 5th century and were predominantly
created to honour the Hindu god, Shiva. After the caves, head south and enjoy a walk along Marine Drive which
hugs the coastline of South Mumbai and where you can catch a dramatic sunset if you are lucky.
4. C is for curry and Indian cuisine which is just as diverse as the country itself. If you are spending
some time in northern India, be sure to try butter chicken, grilled chicken smothered in a sumptuous gravy of
tomato, spices, cream and butter. Traditionally served with naan bread it is unbelievably moreish and it is easy to
eat a bucketload. For something completely different head to west Bengal and tuck into some shukto a hearty
bowl of vegetable stew. Made up of sweet potatoes, papaya and beans with a sauce of coconut, milk, flour and
spices this particular meal will keep you coming back for more.
5. D is for Darjeeling which sits at the foothills of the Himalayas and offers a natural getaway
for both travellers and locals hoping to escape the big smoke. The 2600m summit of Tiger Hill offers some awe-
inspiring views while the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a 78km course of pure beauty that your eyes will always
be thankful for. At the end of such a long journey you will want to put your feet up and have a nice hot cuppa, so
find a local tea shop and settle down for a cup of what has been dubbed the ‘’champagne of teas".
6. E is for elephants and an icon of the country of India, only 20,000 remain in the wild so to
catch a glimpse would be a moment for any person to cherish. One of the best places to spot one of these
wonderful creatures is Bandipur National Park which despite being renowned as a tiger reserve also acts as a
breeding ground for Indian elephants. Located in the Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka the park offers safaris
in the early morning and the late afternoon to cater to all tastes.
