FLAGSHIP EVENTS
15
MEDIA PANCHAYAT
Media Panchayat, the flagship event that opened Spandan, promised an engaging
discourse on India’s emergence as a space power. The event took place on the 29th
November 2023, featuring an open- house discussion with a distinguished panel of
experts from diverse fields - Mr. Madan Jaira, Political Editor and Author; Mr. Kapil
K Tripathi, Scientist F at Vigyan Prasar/DST; Mr. Pallav Bagla, Science Editor for
NDTV; and Ms. Sana Shakeel, Managing Editor at Patriot.
The format of the event was designed to encourage a dynamic exchange of ideas. The
esteemed panelists, representing expertise in space, technology, journalism, and
foreign relations, delivered speeches on the implications of India’s newfound status
as a space power. Following these insights, the event transitioned into an open house
discussion, allowing the audience to pose questions and engage with the experts
directly.
The chosen topic for Media Panchayat 2023— “India’s emergence as a space power:
Espresso Coffee or Masala Chai?” offered a unique perspective. The metaphorical
comparison drew attention to the depth and substance of India’s space endeavors.
Espresso, symbolizing a space mission halfway filled with substance, contrasted with
the wholeness of Masala Chai, representing a comprehensive and impactful approach
to space exploration.
The contextualization of the topic delved into the follow-ups and aftermath of key
space events, examining their trickle-down effects on society and their broader impact
on the country and its resources. The identification of these factors became crucial in
assessing the success of India’s space missions.
16
As a pre-event under Media Panchayat 2023, an essay writing competition had been
announced. The topic, “India’s emergence as a space power: impact and
implications,” invited participants to explore and articulate their perspectives. The
deadline for submissions was set for October 29th, with evaluation entrusted to the
Vivekananda Research Center. A registration fee of 100 was applicable for
participation.
The venue for the event was the B-Block Auditorium, with attendance based on
registration. The timings for this intellectually stimulating discourse were scheduled
to commence at 10:30 AM onwards. With an illustrious panel and a thought-
provoking topic, Media Panchayat 2023 was poised to be an insightful inauguration
for Spandan 2023, fostering a space for dialogue, reflection, and exploration.

CINEPHILE
Cinephile, an annual international film festival scheduled for the 29th and 30th of
November 2023, stands out as a unique and unparalleled event in the realm of cinema. It
holds a special place in the broader context of Spandan, being one of the two flagship
events this year. Aspiring filmmakers from diverse countries are extended a cordial
invitation to submit their entries, each piece to be meticulously judged and rewarded
based on the filmmaker’s prowess. This festival serves as a pivotal platform for budding
talents, aiming to provide them with the opportunity to showcase their inspiring works
of art.
The festival comprises several categories, each offering a chance for filmmakers to vie
for prestigious awards. These categories include Fiction, Documentary, Short
Film/PSM, and Animation. The laurels bestowed upon the winners are not merely
symbolic; they come with tangible rewards in the form of cash, trophies, and
certificates. The recognition and support offered through these prizes serve as a
significant boost for emerging filmmakers, propelling them further in their cinematic
journey.
Professionals, too, have their dedicated categories with similar duration constraints.
An exceptional feature of Cinephile is its commitment to acknowledging all selected
films with a certificate of participation, reinforcing the inclusive nature of the festival.
This not only encourages participants but also fosters a sense of community among
filmmakers.
19
Its unique focus on nurturing emerging talent and providing a global platform for
cinematic expression makes it a cornerstone in the cultural landscape, contributing
significantly to the enrichment of the Indian film industry. As the festival unfolds on the
29th and 30th of November 2023, it promises to be a celebration of creativity, diversity,
and the boundless possibilities within the world of cinema.

SANSKRITI
As the curtain rose on the very first day of Spandan, Sanskriti set the mood and spirit of
the festival, casting a spell on the audience with theme-based performances by the
talented students of VSJMC. The stage became a canvas for a sumptuous experience
that carved ecstatic and eternal memories for both performers and viewers alike.
The 'MOONWALK' theme invited the audience to embark on a magical tour, exploring
the crevices of Indian culture intricately linked to the moon. The performances were not
just artistic expressions; they were a manifestation of the cultural diversity that orbits
our nation. Dance, singing, and drama came together to create a delightful combination
that enchanted and captivated.
This year, Sanskriti 2023 went beyond the boundaries of a typical cultural event. It
was an ode to the success of Chandrayaan 3, a significant milestone in India's space
odyssey. The audience was not just spectators; they were an integral part of the
journey, immersing themselves in the myriad hues of our nation's cultural fabric.
22
As the stage was set and the performers geared up for a night of cultural brilliance,
Sanskriti 2023 beckoned, inviting all to be a part of this extraordinary journey

GRAND FINALE: KAALA CHAAND
A MUSICAL ADAPTATION OF OTHELLO
(A SHAKESPEARE CLASSICAL)
The Grand Finale is Spandan's annual musical theater that covers a variety of subjects
or plays. It is the event that concludes the programme. This year's musical play will
be Othello, a masterwork by William Shakespeare. This tragic tale of love and
betrayal is a timeless classic that has enthralled audiences for generations. It
examines the intricate concepts of manipulation, deceit, and envy.
The focus of the story is on the noble general Othello, who develops feelings for the
stunning Desdemona. Their joy is short-lived, though, as Iago, Othello's faithful
counsel, hatches a scheme to end their union. What comes next is a suspenseful story
that will have you on the tip of your seat, full of romance, mystery, and tragedy. The
Uttar Pradesh district of Gorakhpur serves as the setting for this adaptation of Othello
from an Indian perspective. The play's plot aims to depict the mafia and political
landscape of Gorakhpur in the 1980s. The characters are a fictitious depiction of the
Tiwaris and Shahs, the dominant families of Gorakhpur. To help the audience
comprehend the play, a few new characters are also added.
A compelling act and passionate dance performance will be used in the play to convey
a variety of concepts to the audience. Dances from classical to hip-hop and Whacking
are all featured in the play. Every dance piece will explain to the audience a play's
unfolding event and delve further into its underlying meaning and emotions.
Through setting, acting, and dancing, the play aims to transport the spectator to a
North Indian wedding seamlessly. Encourage the audience to reflect on the play's
themes and central query.
26
The tragic arc of every character concluded with death, which in a sense was portrayal
of an easy escape from the reality that only Cassio was the reaper of. Bulbul, the death
metaphor, was trying to establish that there is no greater place to exist than death,
rather than having to live in the real world and carry the burden of guilt. While
everything was going on, Cassio was also prepared to meet his demise rather than
continue to dwell in Othello's grave of mistrust; yet, he had to embrace this as his fate.

THE BATTLE OF BRADS
(BRADS = BRANDS +ADS)
The first act commences with the Display Ad or Print Ad round, where teams
are handed a basic product outline. Their challenge is to craft a compelling
advertisement that not only showcases the product but also captivates the
audience with innovative storytelling. This round unfolds as a symphony of
creativity, with each team unveiling their unique interpretations of the given
product, successfully showcasing its appeal in imaginative and compelling
ways.
As the anticipation reaches its peak, the spotlight shifts to Round 2: Pitch
and Auction. Here, teams take center stage to present their products and
marketing pitches. The twist lies in the fact that the products are not just for
display; they are up for auction to the highest bidders, including a panel of
esteemed judges. The bidding process adds an exhilarating layer of strategic
entrepreneurship, transforming "Brads" into not just a competition but a
high-stakes spectacle.
To ensure fairness, judges raise their placards only after all pitch
36
presentations are completed, allowing them to thoroughly assess each
product before making decisions. The judging criteria encompass the trifecta
of Creativity and Innovation, Marketability, and Pitch Presentation.
Ultimately, winners are determined through a combination of judges'
evaluations (80%) and auction results (20%). The top three teams with the
highest combined scores emerge as the undisputed champions of the Battle of
Brands.

MY CONTRIBUTION TO PITCH PERFECT
As a crucial member of the core team behind "Pitch Perfect," my
primary responsibility revolved around overseeing the marketing and
sponsorship department of the event. This multifaceted role demanded
a comprehensive approach to securing support and promoting the
workshop, extending far beyond the confines of traditional marketing.
Navigating the challenging landscape of event sponsorship, I played a
pivotal role in identifying and engaging potential sponsors. This
involved actively seeking partnerships with organizations that aligned
with the vision and objectives of "Pitch Perfect." Through strategic
outreach efforts, I sought to create mutually beneficial relationships
that not only supported the financial aspects of the workshop but also
enhanced the overall experience for participants.
In addition to sponsor acquisition, I spearheaded the generation of
leads, employing both offline and online methods to ensure a diverse
pool of potential supporters. This required a nuanced understanding of
the workshop's unique value proposition and an ability to convey its
significance to potential sponsors effectively. Engaging in direct
meetings, whether in person or virtually, allowed me to articulate the
workshop's goals, fostering a deeper connection with sponsors and
generating increased support.
The responsibility of handling the marketing and sponsorship
department also involved orchestrating offline or online meetings
with sponsors, creating a platform for effective communication and
collaboration. These interactions were essential in conveying the
52
workshop's value proposition, aligning sponsor expectations with the
event's objectives, and ensuring a harmonious partnership that
contributed to the success of "Pitch Perfect."
In summary, my role in the marketing and sponsorship department of
"Pitch Perfect" extended beyond a conventional marketing role. It
encompassed the strategic acquisition of sponsors, the generation of
leads through diverse channels, and the facilitation of meaningful
connections through direct engagements. This comprehensive
approach was vital in not only securing financial support but also in
fostering partnerships that enriched the overall workshop experience
for all involved.
