KIẾN THỨC VỀ TỪ ĐỒNG NGHĨA TRONG TIẾNG ANH

1. Hệ thống kiến thức
1.1. Từ đồng nghĩa Tiếng Anh là gì?
Từ đồng nghĩa tiếng Anh (synonym) là những từ có cách phát âm và cách viết khác nhau nhưng
nghĩa giống hoặc tương tự nhau.
Ex: Meet vs Encounter: gặp.
I met Mina at Eiffel Tower in 2006 – Tôi gặp Mina ở tháp Eiffel vào năm 2006.
That was encounter after 5 years of separation – Đó là cuộc gặp gỡ sau 5 năm xa cách.
Phân loại:
Là những từ mang đặc điểm và ý nghĩa giống nhau, có thể thay thế cho nhau
trong hầu hết các hoàn cảnh.
Từ đồng nghĩa
tuyệt đối
Ví dụ: intelligent, clever: thông minh.
Ann is really intelligent/clever.
 Từ có nghĩa sử dụng tùy ngữ cảnh, không thay thế được cho nhau.
Ví dụ:
Watch- see: về nghĩa thì đều được hiểu là nhìn/xem tuy nhiên watch thể
hiện rằng bạn dành thời gian và chú ý nhìn vào sự vật/người. Còn “see” thì
biểu hiện hành động dùng mắt nhìn ai/vật gì có thể cố ý hoặc vô tình.
 Khác biểu thái
Là loại từ chung nghĩa nhưng kiểu biểu đạt tình thái khác nhau.
Ví dụ với các từ mother – mom, father – dad hay grandmother – grandma.
Mom mang ý nghĩa thân mật, đời thường còn Mother mang ý nghĩa trang
trọng hơn.
Từ đồng nghĩa  Từ đồng nghĩa tu từ
tương đối Những cụm từ có khía cạnh tu từ, ý nghĩa, nghĩa bóng khác nhau.
Ví dụ: to end-finish-complete
Chúng đều có ý nghĩa làm xong/hoàn thành
‘to finish/complete’ là từ trung tính, nghĩa là ‘hoàn thành”
My manager usually finishes/completes his task soon.
Sếp tôi luôn hoàn thành nhiệm vụ sớm.
Tuy nhiên, ‘to end” có nghĩa là hoàn thành xong thứ gì và chấm dứt
Ví dụ: Our problems finally ended.

Tuy cùng 1 ý nghĩa nhưng ở mỗi vùng sẽ có cách sử dụng từ khác nhau.
Ví dụ như từ kẹo/ đồ ngọt thì ở Mỹ gọi là candy, trong khi ở Anh gọi là
sweets
 Uyển ngữ, mỹ từ
Sử dụng với mục đích giảm sự bối rối, khó chịu, tạo cảm giác nhẹ nhàng…
Ví dụ: Die – pass away- has/have gone : chết, mất
1.2. Cách ghi nhớ từ đồng nghĩa Tiếng Anh hiệu quả
Để ghi nhớ từ đồng nghĩa một cách hiệu quả nhất, chúng ta cần tham khảo các bước sau:
1. Học thuộc, viết tay từ đồng nghĩa và nghĩa.
2. Tra từ điển từ đồng nghĩa, xem ví dụ để hiểu nghĩa và cách sử dụng rõ hơn.
3. Mỗi ngày học 20 từ, ghi vào sổ tay, ôn lại hàng ngày.
Ví dụ: đối với tính từ Low
– Phát âm: /ləʊ/
– Nghĩa của từ: thấp
– Từ đồng nghĩa:
 short, small, little
 squat, stubby, stunted, truncated, dwarfish, knee-high
 shallow
– Từ trái nghĩa: high
Bạn đừng ngại sử dụng các từ đã học vào thực hành. Bạn nên trực tiếp áp dụng vào giao tiếp, bạn
còn có thêm cơ hội xem cách họ sử dụng, tự sửa sai cho bản thân. Nhớ lưu ý các lỗi sai thường gặp
khi sử dụng từ đồng nghĩa.

1.3. Những lỗi sai thường gặp
Bạn chỉ nên sử dụng từ đồng nghĩa khi thực sự hiểu về chúng, tránh dùng sai khiến phản tác dụng.
1.3.1. Lỗi về ngữ pháp
Nhầm lẫn giữa các từ đồng nghĩa tương đối, hiểu sai về cách sử dụng, ngữ cảnh.
1.3.2. Lỗi kết hợp
Lỗi này khá nhiều người mắc vì không ghi nhớ kỹ thì chuyện nhầm lẫn giữa các từ đồng nghĩa là
không tránh khỏi. Ví dụ như firm/ hard; big/large; ask/ question; …
Với hai câu, bạn sẽ thấy nó như nhau:
‘Can I get a cup of coffee?
Can I buy a cup of coffee?
Cả 2 cụm đều đúng ngữ pháp tuy nhiên khi nói chuyện thì sẽ dùng get a cup of coffee.
1.3.3. Lỗi ngữ nghĩa
Sử dụng từ thể hiện sai do hiểu nhầm ý nghĩa của từ.
Ví dụ với từ uống, nhiều người dịch là “drink”
Nhưng trong tiếng Anh thì uống thuốc sẽ không dùng drink mà dùng take.
Ví dụ: You shouldn’t take medicine with milk
Bạn không nên uống thuốc chung với sữa.
