It is neither an odd nor an even function.

Question 8

(a) ( )
By using a right-angled triangle, sin cos -1 x = 1 - x 2 .

The domain of y = 1 - x 2 is -1 £ x £ 1 .

It is an even function.

(b) Let a = cos -1 x .

Then cos a = x , where 0 £ a £ π .

0 £ cos -1 x £ π and so sin ( cos-1 x ) ³ 0

(c) Let a = cos -1 x .

Squaring both sides we obtain:

y 2 = sin 2 a
= 1 - cos 2 a
= 1 - cos 2 ( cos -1 x )
= 1 - x2

Taking the positive square root, we obtain y = 1 - x 2 .
