Legal bases
According to (Ishida & Guillen, 2003), Local public transits such as
tricycles and motorcycles are significant mode of transportation especially in third
world countries and has been recognized, in most parts of the Philippines, as an
authorized mode of local transportation.
These types of public transport are well-known in small towns and cities of
the country. Philippines is a developing country which means that the number of
commuters are increasing. With that, increasing demand for satsfaction and
increasing complaints have been emerging (Liao, 2013). there have been complaints
on tricycle drivers in Las Pinas City from expectations not being met. Some of
which are giving students unfair discounts, refusing senior citizens, overloading and
rejecting to take commuters without a valid reason. (Alabang Bulletin, 2015).
Participants
The total population of the study was 300 respondents from the Davao
Oriental State College of Science and Technology (DOSCST) who commute on
MASCTODA and MASCOMODA terminals.
Purposive-quota sampling strategy was used in identifying the respondents.
Research design
The study used Descriptive Statistics as the research design. The descriptive
type of research was used in the collection and interpretation of data using survey
questionnaires along with the 5.0 Likert scale to gather data regarding the students’
satisfaction in MASCTODA and MASCOMODA tricycle drivers in DOCST, City
of Mati.
alpha reliability test and obtained a .901 result which shows the excellent level of
reliability of the instrument.
Statistical tool
The study used descriptive or summary statistics with the aid of a
statistician. The statistical tool used were percentage, mean, rank and standard
deviation.
Findings
The profile of the respondents found to be that Females outnumbered males
and that the majority of respondents were fourth-year college students, with the
smallest number being first-year college students. In terms of courses, the majority
of them were senior high school students, with BS Nursing and BS Environmental
Science being the least popular; over half of the respondents were Mandaya tribal
members who liked MASCTODA and frequently rode every day.
In terms of the level of students' satisfaction on the services delivered by
MASCTODA and MASCOMODA drivers in DOSCST, five indicators were
considered, which include reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, and
tangibility. It revealed that all the indicators had the overall results rated as good,
which means that the level of students' satisfaction was moderately satisfied with the
services delivered by MASCTODA and MASCOMODA drivers in DOSCST, City
of Mati.
Recommendations
This study only focuses on the students’ commuter satisfaction. In light of
this, the researcher suggests that we always ensure the safety of student commuters
through commuter welfare. This study also recommends that, in order to establish
the external validity of the study's findings, future researchers should consider other
TODA's (Tricycle Operators and Drivers' Association) and MODA's (Motorcycle
Operators and Drivers' Association) with different respondents.
