CHAPTER 3
MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents and explain the materials and methods adopted by
this research. A such, it mentions every component involved in conducting this
study from the design, environment, materials and the data gathering procedure.
The detailed discussion on the research process will be conducted to obtain the
aims of this research study.
3.1. Research Design
The researchers will employ the Qualitative Method and use Case Study
(Phenomenological, Grounded, Ethnographic) design to determine the effects of
broken family to the selected students of Liloan National High School in their social
relationship. Case study is an intensive study about a person, a group of people or a
unit, which is aimed to generalize over several units Ceniza (2022). Using this kind
of design will help the researchers to explore intensively the effects of broken family
to the students of Liloan National High School on their social relationship within a
particular context through various data sources that reveal multiple facets on the
problem of the study Baxter & Jack (2010). Thus, this method and design is well
suited in answering the statement of the problem and the specific questions of the
study appropriately and adequately.
3.2. Research Environment
The research environment or locale of this study is in Liloan National High
School located at Poblacion, Liloan, Cebu with a zip code 6002. Formerly, Liloan
National High School was named as Arcelo Memorial National High School –
Extension taken the name from her Mother School, the Arcelo Memorial National
High School located at San Vicente, Liloan, Cebu. It was just last year during the
administration of Dr. Hipolito Pegarido, Jr., Dev. ED received its independence from
the mother school with the help of the Liloan Municipality Mayor Vincent Franco D.
Frasco LNHS Records (2022). Instead of being an extension school, Liloan National
High School is now a stand alone school with two departments: Junior High School
and Senior High School. The overall population of the school is 6000 from Grade 7 to
12 Registrar Office Record (2023). The school offered various strands in Senior High
School department, like, STEM, HUMSS, ABM, ICT, and EIM. The researchers on
their study about the effects of broken family to the students of Liloan National High
School will focus on the selected students of Grade 11. Since, Grade 11 is quite
mature compared to the Junior High School students and it is fitted to their study as
participants. Grade 12 though they are also mature as same as Grade 11 but since
they are busy with their immersion program, the researchers opted to make Grade
11 as participants. Thus, the research environment/locale would be the source of
relevant information for the study.

School, Poblacion, Liloan Cebu.
3.3 Research Materials
The researchers will use modified unstructured interview questionnaires
(structured, non-structured) based from the standardized source patterned from
Ceniza (2022) as one of the main materials or instruments in conducting this study.
The same questions will be asked to all the participants. Permit letters are considered
as well before taking an interview to the participants as a matter of giving respect to
the assigned authority. All the questions asked to the participants are valid since it
comes from a reliable source.
3.4. Data Gathering Procedure
After the validation of the modified unstructured interview questionnaires
and upon the approval of the adviser, the researchers will proceed to the interview
process. The following procedures for the interview and the gathering of data is as
follows:
The researchers will craft a letter of permission to be sent to the principal of
Liloan National High School informing the office about the research and the
participants involved in the interview. The participants will be selected through non-
probability sampling (probability sampling). The names of the participants for the
interview are listed and attached in the letter of permission with the signature of the
adviser/s. There will be no interview without the approved letter of permission
from the principal and without informing the adviser/s of the participants.
First, Letter of Permission will be sent first and must be approved to the
assigned authority over the participants who were selected through non-probability
sampling before taking an interview. Not approved Letter of Permission will not
hold an interview process with the participants. The names of the participants must
be written in the letter.
Second, upon receiving the approved Letter of Permission, the researchers
will explain first to their participants the statement of purpose of their study.
Third, the researchers will set schedules on a planned series interview with
the participants (on the participants convenience).
Fourth, if the researchers and participants come to terms with the schedules,
the researchers then will inform their adviser regarding the agreed time schedules
for interview with the participants with a copy of schedules and contact numbers
given to the adviser.
Fifth, when interview is completed, the researchers will collate all the data
gathered and analyze it using thematic analysis. (Methods of Qualitative Analysis (1)
