WHAT’S NEW

There are ways in answering questions after reading a text. One of which is through
using an appropriate graphic organizer.

Read the selection and answer the activities that follow.

The Challenge
Adapted from Highlights for Children

Rico ran towards the gate and he bumped into a boy tucking his white shirt into his
tennis shorts.
“Sorry, I’m late!” Rico excused himself.
“It’s okay. Go, hurry!” the boy said.
For the first time, Rico didn’t want to play in this tournament. His best friend and
doubles partner, Tony, has transferred to another town.
Last year, he remembered they won the doubles competition. They were the
champion. Now, Rico, would be playing singles.
For his coach, Mr. Torres, Rico had all the potentials of being the year’s champion.
He’s tall and lanky for a ten-year-old boy. Rico had won most of the tournaments around the
area. In this city tournament, Rico was not sure because he was going to be without a
buddy.
He went to Court 10 at the far end of the park, behind the concession stand. He sat
down on the bench waiting for his opponent.
Rico bent down to retie the lace of his tennis shoe when he heard the gate open then
close behind him.
“Hi!” the boy he bumped outside walked into the court carrying a worn tennis racket.
He smiled. “I’m Eric.”
“Oh, you’re the boy I bumped into. I’m Rico.”
“Guess what? We’re playing with each other, Eric said.
“You play a lot?” Rico asked.
“For some time. Never played in a tournament before.”
Some people gathered outside the fence, and a man handed Rico a can of yellow
tennis balls.
Rico shook a ball out of the can and moved to his side of the court. “I’d better get this
over fast so I can take a rest for my next match,” he thought.
“Ten-minute warm-up,” shouted the man. “Make your own calls. Be fair. Have a
good time!”
Pic, pac, pic, pac!... the two boys sent the ball back and forth.
“He’s good,” thought Rico as he scrambled to make a backhand shot.
Pic, pac, pic, pac!
“Hey, are you ready?” Eric yelled from the back court.
“Sure!” Rico answered.
Eric served first, a hard serve landing squarely into Rico’s court. Rico’s racket never
touched the ball. An ace!

English for You and Me (Reading), Pages 142-147

2
Rico adjusted his grip and bounced on his toes as Mr. Torres had instructed.
He waited for Eric’s next serve. Oops! It was a spin serve close to the outside edge.
Rico slammed the ball into the net, losing the point.
Eric won the next two. When they had each won six games, they played a
tiebreaker to know who would win the set. Rico squeezed out a win.
Eric tapped Rico on the shoulder, as they sat on the bench for a minute
between sets. “Boy, you’re good!”
Rico wiped his forehead with his towel and said, “You’re good, too, Eric!”
“Thanks,” Eric smiled.
“How did you learn to play that?” Rico asked. Haven’t seen you here before.”
“Only this summer with Mr. Ferrer, the coach who thought I had some talents.
He urged my parents to allow me to join the competition.”
“Well, he’s right!” Rico said. “You’re a boy to watch!”
Eric won the second set. It was down to another tiebreaker in the third and
final sets.
“Lord, I have to win,” Rico thought. “Can’t lose to someone who has only
played last summer.”
The tiebreaker was close, but Rico was able to manage a 6-4 lead. Another
point would win it for him.
Suddenly, he thought of Tony, his partner last year. Eric reminded him of his
pal, Tony. He could spin the ball just in the right direction.
“Right on the line,” Rico said as he jogged to the back line to serve. “Score is
6-5. I’m leading.”
He could still take the match if he won the next point. He looked across the
court at Eric bouncing on his toes, ready to receive the serve. He thought about the
close call on Eric’s last serve. Would Eric be as fair? The ball as tossed by Eric
touched the floor near Rico’s feet. Rico smiled triumphantly.
“You win!” Eric called. Without hesitation, Eric ran toward the net. “Good
match!” he said, giving Rico a high five. “But watch out next time, I’m going to win!”
Rico followed Eric to the bench. He tucked his racket into his bag and wiped
the sweat from his forehead. “Can’t believe that you’ve never played in a tournament
before,’ he said looking at Eric. “You almost won!”
“Almost, but didn’t,” Eric twirled his jacket. “I learned a lot from this
tournament.”
“So did I!” Rico answered then said, “Have you ever played doubles?”
“No,” answered Eric.
“Want to? Maybe we could play together some time. You’re a good partner.
We’ll make a good team. What do you think?” asked Rico.
“Why not?” answered Eric. That’s a challenge for both of us!”

1. Venn diagram is asupports_fig1_304013010
diagram representing mathematical or logical sets
pictorially as circles or closed curves within an enclosing rectangle (the
universal set), common elements of the sets being represented by the
areas of overlap among the circles.

2. Concept map is a diagram that depicts suggested relationships

between concepts. It is a graphical tool that instructional
designers, engineers, technical writers, and others use to organize and
structure knowledge.
A concept map typically represents ideas and information as boxes or
circles, which it connects with labeled arrows in a downward-branching
hierarchical structure.

3. Sequence chart shows a series of steps or events in the order that

they take place. Any concept that has a distinct order can be displayed
in this type of organizer. It is an excellent tool for teaching students the
steps necessary to reach a final point.

Directions: Read the short selection and arrange the events in order using a Sequence
Chart. Write your answers in your notebook.

Alexa is now in Grade 6. She wakes up early in the morning and prays before
going up. She fixes her bed and takes a bath to freshen herself. After dressing up, she
helps her mother in setting up the table for their breakfast. Then, she washes the dishes
after eating breakfast. Lastly, she gets her things and kisses her parents before going to
school.
Although Alexa is the only child in the family, she is a responsible and kind girl
that is why her classmates and teachers like her so much.

Directions: Read the story and answer the questions that follow by using an appropriate
graphic organizer.

Mindanao Brothers…Facts to Ponder On

Adapted from Grade 6 Experiencing English

The Tausugs are the largest of the Muslim groups who live in Jolo and are
also considered to be the bravest. It is said that they have never been conquered by
any tribe in 300 years. Tausugs are described as warlike people but most of them are
friendly, peaceful and hospitable. They are also lovers of music and dance. Honor
and self-esteem are valued traits among the Tausugs.
Here are some interesting and unique features of Tausug culture:

1. Tausug warriors wear amulets for protection and these are secured from gurus
(teachers) for a fee. These are used to make the wearer invulnerable to
bullets.
2. They are completely attired only when they sport weapons around their waists.
3. Amulets are not handled by women and children for fear of losing the amulets’
potency. Amulets are not worn when one is drinking intoxicating liquor.
4. Many Tausugs believe in black magic, sorcery, voodoo, and love potions.
5. The Koran, their Bible, forbids the eating of dead meat, blood and the meat of
swine.
6. A political leader sometimes resorts to polygamy to have a big family.
7. It is considered immodest for a Tausug to mention his own name, or that of his
father or mother so he waits for someone to say it for him.

The Badjaos are most found along the coast of Jolo, Siasi and Tapul Island,
and farther south in Subuti, Sitangkal, Tawi-Tawi islands in Mindanao. The word
Badjao means fisherman. Badjaos are thus referred to as “sea gypsies,” “people of
the ocean,” or “boat dwellers.”
Here are more facts about them.

1. Badjaos do not have an established religion; therefore, they do not have a

special day for worship unlike other Muslims who observe devotion on Fridays,
and the Christians who go to church on Sundays,
2. Badjaos are monogamous. Live-in partners are socially ostracized and
condemned outright by their families and the community.
3. Badjaos never submit to, nor consult with a physician.
4. In Badjao communities, recreation time depends on the tides of the ocean.
Low tide is time to frolic in the waves, sun, and sand.
5. Although generally poor and lacking formal education, Badjaos are regarded
as cultured because they are hardworking and peace-loving.
