What’s New

Read the article and be ready to answer the comprehension question.

Computer

Are you threatened by the idea that computers will soon replace
man? Do you worry that computers might eventually take over everything?
Computer is an electronic machine that processes information- it’s
an information processor: it takes in raw information (data) at one end,
stores it until it’s ready to work on , munches and clutches it for a bit, then
spindles out the result at other end.
The processes of taking information is called input, storing
information is known as memory (storage), chewing information called
processing and spitting out results is called output. Computers undergo
stages to process information- input, memory/storage, processing, and
output.
Computer was invented to benefit and assist people, not to replace
them. Though this machine is versatile in many ways it can’t however make
emotional judgments, disobey instructions entered by humans, read
people's minds, or replace interpersonal relationships. On the contrary, it
still needs humans to perform even the simplest commands. These
machines are still ineffective without human interventions so they can work
efficiently to achieve good results. Ultimately, computers are dependent
upon people.

Comprehension check:

1. What is a computer?

2. Why do people think it as a threat?

3. How does this electronic machine process information?

4. How can computer become ineffective?

How did you correctly guess the meaning of the word?

Remember that we can infer the meaning of the unfamiliar words like ICT
terms in a sentence through context clues. These clues are found within the
sentence as the word to which it refers. In some cases, the clues can be found in the
preceding sentence. Lets’ recall the types of context clues. There are at least four
kinds of context clues that are quite common.

1. Synonym
A synonym, or word with the same meaning, is used in the sentence.

Example:

2. Antonym
Sometimes a word or phrase is clarified by the presentation of the opposite
meaning somewhere close to its use. Look for signal words when applying
context clues

Example:

birdbrained. He was savvy.

3. Explanation
The unknown word is explained within the sentence or in a sentence
immediately preceding.
