During Reading Students read the following paragraph, and then answer
the questions that follow.

Dedicated Reading time (1) Do you know that two-thirds of the world’s junk
consists of plastic? (2) In every place we go to and in
every direction, we look to, plastics are a common sight.
(3) It is because almost anything now can be made of
plastic, just as almost anything can be stored in a plastic
container. (4) But how are we going to dispose of the
discarded plastic objects and the used plastic
containers? (5) If we dump the plastic junk into the seas,
it will never break or corrode although seawater is a
fairly corrosive substance which eats away even the
strongest metals. (6) If we burn plastic garbage, it will
give deadly fumes which will cause cyanide poisoning to
persons who inhale enough of the gases. (7) Burying

plastic garbage may sound aesthetically good since it

would clear our surroundings’ ugly sights. (8) But what
about possible hazard at some future time when these
materials are unearthed?

1. What constitutes the greater bulk of our garbage?

2. Is dumping the plastic junk into the sea a good way of
getting rid of it? Why?
3. What happens if we burn plastic garbage?
4. What is the advantage of burying plastic garbage?
What is the disadvantage?
5. As a student how can you help reduce plastic waste in
your school and in your community?
6. Based on the answers to the above questions, what
should be the decision of the people with regard to the
use of plastic materials?
A. Plastic materials, which make up two-thirds of the
world’s junk, should be used sparingly because plastic
garbage cannot be burned and does not decay.
B. Unless scientists find adequate means of disposing of
this non-decaying plastic garbage, the use of plastic
materials poses a problem to our environment.
C. Plastic junk should be disposed of by burying it
instead of throwing them into the sea or burning them.

Note: Teacher tells the class that in answering the

last question, they needed to find some reasons and
pieces of evidence from the text to come up with that
sound decision. She further tells them that when one
decides or judges something based on given evidence
or proof, one draws conclusion.
Post Reading Activity Students watch a video (Inferences and Conclusions
Practice – True Move Commercial) and make inferences
and draw conclusion about what is happening in the
video.
