TASK 2: Assignment

TIME: 1 HOUR

1. This assignment consists of FOUR questions.

2. Answer all the questions.
3. Read through the whole assignment before you start.
4. Number your answers as indicated.
5. Write neatly and legibly.
6. Rule off after each question.
7. Start each question on a new page.
8. Only use a blue ballpoint pen.
9. Draw a clear line through work that should not be marked.
10. Only a non-programmable, non-graphical calculator may be used.
11. All calculations must be shown to receive marks.
12. Round off all answers to two decimal places, unless otherwise stated.
13. Give answers with positive exponents.
14. Clearly show all calculations, diagrams, graphs, etc.
15. Answers only will not necessarily be awarded full marks.
16. Diagrams are not necessarily drawn to scale.

QUESTION 2

2.1 Given: ∆𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 and ∆𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷 with 𝐴𝐴̂ = 𝐷𝐷

 , 𝐵𝐵 = 𝐸𝐸 and 𝐶𝐶̂ = 𝐹𝐹.

Sketch the diagram below on your folio paper and prove, with the necessary
𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴
construction, the statement that proves that
𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷
= 𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷 .

2.2 Diameter 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 , of circle 𝑀𝑀 , bisects 𝐹𝐹𝐴𝐴̂𝐵𝐵 . 𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀 is perpendicular to cord 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 . 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸 ,
extended, meets the circle at 𝐶𝐶. 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶 is drawn.

2.2.1 Prove ∆𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴|||∆𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴. (5)

𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴
2.2.2 Hence, determine the numerical value of 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴
. (5)

2.2.3 Prove ∆𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶|||∆𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴. (4)

2.2.4 Prove 𝐴𝐴𝐷𝐷2 = 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶. 𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷. (3)

QUESTION 3

In the diagram, a circle with tangent 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶 is given. 𝐴𝐴, 𝐵𝐵, 𝐷𝐷 and 𝐸𝐸 are points on the perimeter
of the circle. 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 = 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 and 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴//𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸. 𝐴𝐴̂1 = 𝑥𝑥

3.1 Give, with reasons, three more angles each equal to 𝑥𝑥. (3)

3.2 Prove that ∆𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷|||∆𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷. (3)

3.3 Prove that:

𝐵𝐵𝐵𝐵 × 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴
3.3.1 𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷 = 𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷
(3)

𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷 × 𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷
3.3.2 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸 = 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴

QUESTION 4

The diagram below is the top view design of a new railway system. Eight stations are being
built, marked with letters 𝐴𝐴 to 𝐻𝐻 below. You have been asked to do some calculations for
the railway company. As an engineer you know that:

𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 ∥ 𝐵𝐵𝐵𝐵 and 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 ∥ 𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺

𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 5 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 8 𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹 5 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶 8
𝐵𝐵𝐵𝐵
= 8 , 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 = 15 , 𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹 = 13 and 𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷 = 7

If the straight-line distance of the track from 𝐹𝐹 to 𝐶𝐶 is 390 kilometres and it takes 40 hours
to build one kilometre of the track, determine the number of hours it will take to build the
section from 𝐸𝐸 to 𝐷𝐷. (6)
