Arresting of pressure leakages

Problem : Pressure leakage in the distribution line will result inefficient distribution
system. Proper water line pressure ensures supply for filling of reservoirs and briefs on
pressure leakage in various sections.

Solution : With Installation of pressure and flow meters in strategic points as shown in
below fig help in detection of pressure leakages. Then corrective actions are initiated.

 Reservoir overflows
 Direct supplies and bi-pass
usage
 Water flow
 Leakages in main lines,  Revenue Loss
 Water level
 Water loss valves and joints and increase in cost
 Energy consumption
 Unmetered consumption of per unit water
 Pressure
 Loss of water head
 Pump inefficiencies

Arrest Overflows

Problem : There were 24 overflow instances found in one

month and 4700 kilo liters of Purified water is lost in these
Overflows.

Action : Arrest Overflows

Real time monitoring of reservoir overflow actuate the alarm such
that timely action is being taken by personnel

Untimely opening of valves Leakage through inlet after closing of valve

Overflows

Exceptions

 All the reservoirs are advised to take water in to the reservoir and then distribute instead of bi-passing the
reservoir inlet.
 Quantity is allocated based on the population

Pump Efficiency Possibility of 24/7 operation

Pumps effeciency is calculated using the information logged by system
Efficiency = (Head x Discharge) / Energy Consumed
 Tests conducted at all plants and reservoirs
Faulty pumps in the plants have been identified and are replaced with new pumps for water distribution
 Comprehensive analysis conducted with the
help of our solution

Found out that, it is possible to give 24/7 water

supply to the city with existing facilities without
much investing on infrastructure

WATER SUPPLY SHORTFALL AND
MITIGATION USING SCADA
DURING FLOODS IN THE CITY
4 OCT 2009 TO 7 OCT 2009
Objective under flood situation
• To provide safe drinking water
• To provide minimum water equally to everyone

Situation under flood

• Total installed capacity of Head Water Works - 40 MGD
• Treatment Plants shutdown due to flood - 19 MGD
• Operational capacity - 21 MGD
• Acute shortfall – ~50%

Action
• Opening of Interconnection of plants and distribution lines.
• Re-scheduling of filling sequence to meet the objective.
• Continuous online central monitoring and control using SCADA
• Filling right quantity
• Chlorine Level during delivery
• In Time Delivery

Result
• Reservoirs got enough quantity at right time
• Safe drinking water distributed at least one time a day
