Questions 149-150 refer to the following e-mail.

From: Hannah Gruber <hgruber@argyleprinting.com>

To: Jonathan McLean <jmclean@argyleprinting.com>
Subject: Some ideas
Date: Wednesday, December 23

Dear Mr. McLean,

You asked for suggestions for how we can maximize our profits here at Argyle Printing
Company. Having given it some thought, it is clear to me that we should focus on trying
to figure out why we lose so many customers to other businesses. Over the past two
years, we took on printing projects for 32 first-time clients, less than half of whom have
subsequently requested our services.

Instead, they opted to go with one of our competitors. I believe we should focus our
efforts less on attracting new customers, and more on satisfying the ones we already have.
We might want to consider discounts for returning customers, better communication to
maintain stronger relationships with clients, and exclusive services for long-time clients.

Please consider adding this to the agenda for the managers meeting on Monday.
I think it is a topic that could generate some fruitful discussion.

Regards,
Hannah Gruber
Client Accounts Manager
Argyle Printing Company

149. Why was the e-mail written? 150. What would Ms. Gruber like to discuss?
(A) To announce monthly profits (A) The need to attract new clients
(B) To respond to a request (B) How to retain repeat customers

(D) To recommend a business (D) More efficient printing methods

Brenda Chalmers
[ 2:15 P.M. ]
Does that mess up our marketing campaign schedule?

Can’t see an issue with it. Assuming all of the posters arrive by
[ 2:20 P.M. ]
noon on Thursday, our plans won’t need to change. Bob, I’ll be
sure to allocate and send posters to each branch that same day.

Brenda Chalmers
Perfect, but keep me posted if you hear anything else from Mike.
[ 2:22 P.M. ]
Also, have you confirmed that the ingredients for our new menu
items are being shipped to our restaurants?

Liam O’Leary
No problem. I’ll also get in touch with Regent Food Supplies in a

moment to check on those ingredients. The last time I spoke with
them, they estimated a Saturday morning delivery time.

Bob Keenan That’s fine. Thanks, Liam. I hope the new menu items are a

Subject: Selection
Date: July 31

To whom it may concern,

I am the proprietor of At Home Feast, a local catering company. I am looking for a new supplier of
fresh produce for my business. I was hoping I could meet with a member of your management team
or someone I could speak with about bulk sales. I would make weekly purchases of between 50 and
100 pounds of produce, depending on that week’s catering jobs— sometimes, even more than that. I
visited your store last week and enjoyed all the free samples you provided.

If you could please call me on my cell phone at 366-2334 to discuss our possible partnership, I
would greatly appreciate it. My current supplier has been providing sub-par products over the past
few weeks and my business has been suffering as a result. I depend on customer recommendations
to grow my business, so if they are not happy with the food I provide, then I cannot generate new
clients.

I look forward to speaking with you.

record collector, I am only interested in official albums, not unofficial bootleg recordings. Your Web site
guaranteed that the cassettes and records are all genuine original recordings and in their original cases
and record sleeves. When I looked at my purchases, however, I noticed that the record sleeve for the
Stevie Vaughn album appears to be a poor-quality copy, and not the original album art. I am obviously
very disappointed by this.

I would appreciate it if you could respond to this letter with an agreeable solution to this problem.

Regards,
Dave Seymour

Dear Mr. Seymour,

I was sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied with one of your recent purchases. When I put your
order together, I also had doubts about the record sleeve you mentioned. I agree that it does appear
to be fake, but after a little bit of research, I can confirm to you that it is indeed the genuine record
sleeve for that album. It turns out that this is a special collector’s edition of the album, and only 500
copies were released in this unique record sleeve. Therefore, please be assured that you purchased a
genuine record in its official sleeve.

In a strange turn of events, I noticed that one of the other items you purchased does actually include
unoriginal cover art: the cassette tape by Loretta Myles, for which I have provided a full refund to your
credit card.

I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

Michael Finch

Questions 191-195 refer to the following instant message, e-mail, and article.

Troy Peters (10:12 A.M.)

Good morning, Ms. Miller. It’s almost time for us to make our formal announcement for this year’s
GES Conference. A couple of our last-minute potential speakers have yet to respond to formally
accept our invitation, so I’d like you to follow up on that. Assuming they accept, this will be their first
time speaking at the event, and we will need to see a copy of their presentation slides in advance.
Also, please take the opportunity to apologize that first-time speakers will not receive a payment.
Unfortunately, our budget is only large enough to cover appearance fees for returning speakers.

Subject: Ms. Choi’s talk

Dear Ms. Miller,

I am responding to you on behalf of my supervisor, Sarah Choi’s. Ms. Choi is currently
overseas on business and has asked me to coordinate all matters pertaining to her
appearance at the Global Eco Solutions Conference in June. Of course, she is delighted to
have been invited, and looks forward to speaking at the event.
As the R&D Director at Kortech Corporation, Ms. Choi will discuss the company’s valuable
contributions to wastewater management systems and its plans to implement such systems
on a global scale over the coming years. I am afraid I do not have access to her presentation
slides at this current time, but I will certainly be able to get these to you once Ms. Choi
returns from her business trip in two days’ time.
With regard to the appearance fee, Ms. Choi is more than happy to participate without
payment. She believes the conference is critical to raising awareness of the need for green
energy solutions, and she is proud to participate in such a noble cause.

Best regards,
Min-jung Park

Questions 196-200 refer to the following notice, advertisement, and e-mail.

From: Desmond Leyton

To: All Regalo Cinema Employees

November 26

As you know, the school term ends next month and students will be off for their Christmas holidays,
so we will be offering the yearly 30-percent-off Christmas discount for high school and university
students who purchase our Unlimited Movie Pass during the school break, between December 15 and
January 5. Furthermore, Regalo Cinema is also thinking about running one of two additional special
offers to new and existing Unlimited Movie Pass holders during the upcoming winter season (December
15-February 15).

We want you, our staff, to consider the two potential offers and let us know your preference. First
of all, we might begin showing one movie for free at 9 A.M. every Sunday. This would appeal to our
elderly customers, and we could include breakfast items such as muffins, bagels, and coffee.

The second possible offer would be that Unlimited Movie Pass holders receive a discount on food and
beverages when they come to a weekend showing. This discount will most likely be 20% and would
apply to all drinks, popcorn, nachos, and candy. However, hot dogs would not be covered, to ensure
that they do not sell out even quicker than they typically do these days.

I really appreciate your input on this matter by November 29.

Desmond Leyton
Marketing Director, Regalo Cinema

Regalo Cinema

Purchase an Unlimited Movie Pass between December 1 and January 5 to receive a 30% discount.
The Unlimited Movie Pass allows holders to see as many movies as they want over a 12-month
period.

Enjoy cheap food and drink on the weekends:

Beginning December 1, all Unlimited Movie Pass holders can receive significant discounts on most
items from our concessions stand. Please note: Sharing of passes for the purpose of buying snacks
and beverages is not permitted.

Subject: Re: Winter figures

Dear Desmond,

Thanks for sending me the sales data. I was delighted to see that the number of Unlimited
Movie Passes that were purchased during our winter promotion was ten percent higher than it
was at this time last year.

In particular, I was amazed by how many high school and university students purchased passes
this year. I’m certain that our other special offer contributed to this increased demand, and we
should definitely consider doing the same thing in July for our summer break promotion.

By the way, I’d like to get together with you and our sales director to finalize strategies for the
festival we’re holding next month. We’re showing a lot of classic films, and we need to figure
out how to target potential customers who might be interested in them. Let me know a day and
time that works for you.
