(a) This problem is to check if you can find values by interpolating the steam table. Use the
Temperature Saturated Steam Table to find the following properties of water. Clearly mention
what information was taken from the table and how the interpolation was performed.
(i) Saturation pressure at 49 deg C
(ii) Temperature and pressure of dry saturated steam with =2590 kJ/kg
(iii) Specific Enthalpy of wet steam with 30% quality at 50 deg C

(b) A closed vessel contains steam at 1000.0 psia in a 4-to-1 vapor-volume-to-liquid-

volume ratio. What is the steam quality?

(c) What is the enthalpy change in British thermal units when 1 gal of water is heated from
60°F to 1150°F at 240 psig?

See next slide for some notes on quality

Vapour Quality or Dryness Fraction
• Notes:
• Vapour quality or dryness fraction is denoted by symbol ‘x’ and is
defined as
=
X X X y
X X X GXr + X X X y

• x=1: Dry saturated vapor

• x=0: Saturated liquid

• x=0.3: Wet vapour, wherein one kilogram consists of 30% vapor and
70% liquid

• Specific enthalpy of vapour-liquid mix is mass weigthed average of the

vapor and liquid enthalpies
( )= + (1 − )
