At a graphic design company, a certain group of people have been asked to work
together on a project. There is plenty of time to complete this project, all the group
members have enough knowledge and skills to make meaningful contributions and are
equal in status, education and experience. However, they have very different
personalities and therefore different communication, leadership and problem-solving
styles.
Temba is strongly task-orientated. His focus is on completing the group’s goal. He likes
to get things done and to be in control without getting the input of the others. Achieving
success is his bottom line and he will not hesitate to use aggressive behaviour to resolve
conflict. Busi is social and people-orientated. She focuses on the internal dynamics of
the team and believes that if the team is happy, they will be more efficient in their work.
She likes to consult with members of the team regarding proposed actions before making
a final decision and listens effectively and deliberately to advice. Luthando believes that
each person should develop on their own, come up with their own solutions, and that the
group will progress at its own pace. She also tends to pursue her own interests at times,
even when it is detrimental to the group.
