Description of activities:
Follow the INSTRUCTIONS throughout the guide. Transcribe the theoretical part to the math
notebook. You must solve the exercises proposed in the “Learning Activities” on grid sheets
filed in your folder.
You must submit your work on Monday October 24th (901 and 904), Tuesday October 25th
(902, 903 and 905), at the respective class time.
Linear functions are defined by the first-degree polynomial 𝒂𝒙 + 𝒃. Another kind of function is defined
by the second-degree polynomial 𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄.
Definition
Consider the graph 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒙𝟐 shown below. The y-axis is a line of symmetry. The point (𝟎, 𝟎), where the
graph crosses the line of symmetry, is called the vertex of the parabola.
𝒙 = 𝟒 or 𝒙 = 𝟐
(𝟒, 𝟎) (𝟐, 𝟎)
−𝒃 −𝒃
Vertex: We obtain the coordinates of the vertex by applying the formula: ( , 𝒇 ( ))
𝟐𝒂 𝟐𝒂
𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟔𝒙 + 𝟖 𝒂=𝟏 𝒃 = −𝟔
−𝒃 −(−𝟔) 𝟔
Abscissa: 𝒙 = : 𝒙= =𝟐=𝟑
𝟐𝒂 𝟐∙𝟏
−𝒃
Ordinate: 𝒚 = 𝒇 ( 𝟐𝒂 ): 𝒚 = 𝒇(𝟑) = (𝟑)𝟐 − 𝟔(𝟑) + 𝟖
𝒚 = 𝒇(𝟑) = 𝟗 − 𝟏𝟖 + 𝟖
𝒚 = 𝒇(𝟑) = −𝟏
Therefore, the coordinates of the vertex are: (𝟑, −𝟏)
Symmetry Axis Equation: As the abscissa of the vertex is 3, then the equation of the symmetry axis is
𝒙 = 𝟑.
Y-axis intercept: Since c is equal to 8, then the parabola intersects the Y-axis at the point (𝟎, 𝟖).
Fifth point: The horizontal distance from the Y-axis to the axis of symmetry is 3 units; so, from the axis
of symmetry, also horizontally, we measure 3 units to the other side, in this case, to the right, and thus
locate the point (𝟔, 𝟖).
Graph:

Vertex: We obtain the coordinates of the vertex by applying the formula: ( , 𝒇 (𝟐𝒂 ))
𝟐𝒂
𝒇(𝒙) = −𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟓 𝒂 = −𝟏 𝒃 = −𝟒
−𝒃−(−𝟒) 𝟒
Abscissa: 𝒙 = 𝟐𝒂: 𝒙 = 𝟐(−𝟏) = −𝟐 = −𝟐
−𝒃
Ordinate: 𝒚 = 𝒇 ( ): 𝒚 = 𝒇(−𝟐) = −(−𝟐)𝟐 − 𝟒(−𝟐) + 𝟓
𝟐𝒂
𝒚 = 𝒇(−𝟐) = −𝟒 + 𝟖 + 𝟓
𝒚 = 𝒇(−𝟐) = −𝟒 + 𝟏𝟑
𝒚 = 𝒇(−𝟐) = 𝟗
Therefore, the coordinates of the vertex are: (−𝟐, 𝟗)
Symmetry Axis Equation: As the abscissa of the vertex is -2, then the equation of the symmetry axis is
𝒙 = −𝟐.
Y-axis intercept: Since c is equal to 5, then the parabola intersects the Y-axis at the point (𝟎, 𝟓).
Fifth point: The horizontal distance from the Y-axis to the axis of symmetry is 2 units; so, from the axis
of symmetry, also horizontally, we measure 2 units to the other side, in this case, to the left, and thus
locate the point (−𝟒, 𝟓).
