Typhoon Development
With the right combination of conditions to form, typhoons develop in the following stages:

1. Evaporation of water at ocean surface temperature of 26.5oC or higher

2. Warm, moist air rises from the ocean surface, creating a low pressure area (LPA) near the ocean
surface.
3. Air from surrounding high pressure areas(HPA) rushes toward the LPA. This air is initially dry and
cooler, but near the ocean surface, the air is heated and carries more water vapor from continuous
evaporation.
4. As the warm air rises toward the cooler parts of the upper atmosphere, it cools off and the water vapor
begins to condense to form clouds.
5. More clouds form and wind speed picks up as the Coriolis effect causes the air to spiral as it rises. As
the winds rotate faster, the LPA near the ocean surface becomes a tropical depression and may
eventually turn into a typhoon.

Conditions for Typhoon Formation

1) Continuous Evaporation and Water Cycles

2) Differences in Air Pressure

3) Convergent Winds- accumulated high speed winds moving toward a

particular area

On 16 December 2021, Typhoon Rai (local name Odette)
brought torrential rains, violent winds, landslides, and storm
surges in the provinces of Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands
in Mindanao, in five provinces of Visayas, and in the island of
Palawan in Luzon before it exited the Philippine area of
responsibility.

How Landforms and Bodies of Water Affect Typhoons?
Effect of Landforms:
Effects of Bodies of Water:
*Orography precipitation is the formation of rain or snow
over the mountain due to the condensation of air rising over
*Large bodies of water affect the strength
the mountain.
of the typhoons that hit adjacent
*Places near a sea with mountains and hills experience the
landmasses. They determine whether the
orographic effect. (see fig 7-10 of your book). Wind coming
air will be warm or cold, or whether its
from the sea is heavy with moisture from evaporation. Hot
relative humidity will be high or low.
air rises and water vapor condenses, sometimes resulting in
*As climate change causes the ocean
cloud formation. Most of the rain that forms can roll down on
surface to become warmer than normal,
the seaside, and a little or none on the leeward side of the
increased temperatures provide more
mountains(side away from the sea)
energy for an intense storm to develop.
*Areas on the leeward side experiences less typhoons than
the rest of the country that are exposed to sea.
