TYPES OF POLLUTION?

Pollution is often classed as point

source or nonpoint source pollution.

1. WATER POLLUTION
Water pollution is the introduction into fresh or
ocean waters of chemical, physical, or
biological material that degrades the quality of
the water and affects the organisms living in it.

TYPES OF POLLUTION?
Pollution is often classed as point source or nonpoint
source pollution.

1. AIR POLLUTION
Air pollution is the accumulation in the
atmosphere of substances that, in sufficient
concentrations, endanger human health or
produce other measured effects on living matter
and other materials.

3. LAND POLLUTION
Land pollution is the degradation of the Earth's land surface
through misuse of the soil by poor agricultural practices, mineral
exploitation, industrial waste dumping, and indiscriminate
disposal of urban wastes.

• Soil Misuse
Soil erosion--a result of poor agricultural practices--removes rich humus

TYPES OF POLLUTION?
4. NOISE POLLUTION
Noise pollution has a relatively recent origin. Although the frequency
(pitch) of noise may be of major importance, most noise sources are
measured in terms of intensity, or strength of the sound field. The
standard unit, one decibel (dB), is the amount of sound that is just
audible to the human ears.

5. RADIATION POLLUTION
Radiation pollution is any form of ionizing or nonionizing radiation that
results from human activities. The most well-known radiation results
from the detonation of nuclear devices and the controlled release of
energy by nuclear-power generating plants. Other sources of radiation
include spent-fuel reprocessing plants, by-products of mining
operations, and experimental research laboratories.

6. THERM AL POLLUTI ON
Thermal pollut ion is the discharge of wast e heat via energy diss ipation into
cooling wat er and subs equent ly into nearby waterways . The major s ourc es of
t hermal pollut ion are f os sil-fuel and nuclear elec tric-power generating facilit ies
and, t o a les ser degree, cooling operat ions ass ociat ed with indust rial
manuf ac turing, s uc h as s teel foundries, other primary-met al manuf ac turers, and
chemical and petrochemical producers.

7. LI GHT POLLUTION refers to the large amount of light produced by mos t urban
and other heavily-populat ed areas. Light pollut ion prevent s citizens f rom seeing
f eatures of the night sky and has also been shown to impede the migrat ion
pat terns of birds and t he ac t ivit ies of noct urnal animals .
