Preface
The procedures included in this book are to be performed in conjunction with the
requirements and recommendations outlined in API specifications. Any repairs to the
equipment covered by this book should be done by an authorized GPE service
representative. GPE will not be responsible for the loss or expense resulting form any
failure of equipment or any damage to any property or death or any person resulting in
whole or in part form repairs performed by other than authorized GPE personnel. Such
unauthorized repairs shall also serve to terminate any contractual or other warranty, if
any, on the equipment and may also result in equipment no longer meeting applicable
requirements.
File copies of this manual are maintained. Revisions and /or additions well be made
as deemed necessary by GPE. The drawings in this book are not drawn to scale, but the

1. Application
The ram blowout preventer is one of the key elements of the well control
system. It is mainly used to control the well head pressure during such
operations as drilling, servicing and oil testing to prevent any blow out hazard
effectively and ensure safe operations. Specifically, then 2FZ 18-70 dual ram
blowout preventer can perform the following operations:

1) With proper pipe ram sealing the annular space between casing and

drilling string when there is pipe in the hole.

2) With blind ram completely sealing well head when there is no pipe in the

hole.

3) When the well head is closed, with killing manifold and choke manifold

connected to the drilling spool and the outlet of the body doing mud

circulating, chocking and releasing, well killing and well cleaning etc.

4) With killing manifold and choke manifold, effectively controlling bottom

hole pressure to balance bottom hole pressure.

3. General Features:
The ram BOP is made up of body, intermediate flange, bonnet, piston,
hydro-cylinder, opening piston, closing piston, Ram Change-Cylinder, ram
assembly , locking housing and locking screw, tandem booster etc.
The connection of the upper and bottom of the BOP are API SPEC 6A latest
Edition /ISO10423 standardized connection. All parts that were reached the
drilling mud which is accordance with NACE-MR-0175 standard.
It is designed inside oil flowing, so it is easy to change the ram,
pressure-contain(body, intermediate flange) is forging, material property is
meeting to API 16A and NACE MR0175-2003 requirements, the sealing
between the intermediate flange and body is realized by seal ring-body and
metal-seal-carrier, Seal ring-body can easy to change. Metal-seal-carrier can not
the screw force of the bonnet bolt, the metal-sealing carrier fluctuate-sealing, it's
surface rubber sealing cling with intermediate flange & body when pressure
effect to the sealing carrier and come true seal. The sealing surface of the ram
cavity is treated with the chemical, so the hardness of the surface is heightened
and the wearing is energized, which avoids scratching the ram, and it also
enhances the sealing reliability. Piston, ram change/open and close and
operation piston bear cavity the bonnet weigh because the surfaces take the
anti-corrosion and anti-wearing treatment. Ram is long rotundity so the stress is
equality.

4. Operating Principle
Connect the hydraulic control line to the open and closing oil port. When
close the ram, the hydraulic oil flow into the closing cavity of cylinder to push the
piston, so the ram is moving forward to the well center to unclasp the drill tools,
so the well is closed. When open the ram, the hydraulic oil flow into the opening
cavity of cylinder to push the piston, so the ram is moving forward to the well
center to unclasp the drill tools, so the well is opened.
Ram sealing packing and make up of top seal and packing .the sealing of
the drilling pipe is realized by the packer, the drilling pipe is closing to the sealing
surface with the hydraulic pressure. Top seal realizes the sealing on the top, and
the pressure helps the well to the closed, the element retrieves the original status
after the pressure is disappeared. A guide mechanism is designed in ram, rams
automatically center pipe in hole.

5. Major Usages:
BOP is designed for controlling the blowout during the drilling, the single and
double ram BOP match to the control system, they can used incorporate or
separately and it also can used with annular BOP.
Major tasks:

1. BOP can seal the annular space between the casing and drill pipe or
between the casing and tubing when the well is working.
2. The blind ram can seal the well when there is no drilling pipe in the well.
3. It can be used with the kill /chock manifold to control flow pressure and
balance the drilling pressure.
4. It can realize the well-killing; over-cleaning and other special operations
when the well is closed.

6. Operating & Installation:

1. The installation of the ram assembly:


1.1 Ram assembly consists of ram, top seal and front packer. All parts must be
cleaned and lubricated before the installation.
1.2 Push front packer in place. A soft hammer can be used. Press in top seal,
making sure the pins in the top seal engage through the pins in the front packer. The
rubber in the top seal will extend above the ram surface. This excess of rubber is
provided to make the ram pack tightly.
1.3 Ram disassembly : First remove the top seal, and then remove the front
packer.

2. The procedure to replace the ram assembly replacing ram assembly:


The procedure to replace the ram assembly is that: open the ram, close the
bonnet, close the ram, and open the bonnet.
When replace the ram, first disassembly the four studs of the bonnet, and the
pressure which should be controlled under 500 psi, enters from the close-port,
because the pressure areas are various, the bonnet and the intermediate flange
move afterward the well center along the open and closing piston, the ram moves to
the closing position, when the ram reaches to the max travel. Lift it by lift-eye.
After change the new ram, the pressure that should be controlled under 3.5MPa,
enters from the open-port. The bonnet and the intermediate flange move towards to
well center along the open and closing piston, and the ram moves to the open port.
Screw the studs when the surface of the intermediate flange touches the body. Bolts
serve only to hold bonnets closed.
A important feature of the type U hydraulic system is that the rams are pulled
back close to the bonnets before the bonnets begin moving toward the preventer
body. Because of this, rams never interfere with pipe in the hole or otherwise obstruct
the vertical bore.

Note: When replace the ram ,the control pressure must be increased slowly form
zero and the pressure should be immediately stopped when the switch reaches to
position, if the control pressure is higher than 3.5MPa(500 psi), the oil-way of the BOP
must be checked and adjusted. It shall inspection and fixes it.

3. Installation of the BOP:


I. The Ram BOP must be tested by rated working pressure are only is the test
qualified then and to the field.
II. Size of the Ram, which installed in the BOP should be the same as eh drilling
pipe in the field.
III. Inspect the top and bottom location of the BOP should be installed
correctly.(According to the arrowhead in the body).
IV. Clean the ring gasket groove ,and check the sealing-surface, and then install
the ring gasket , and screw the nut as recommended torque firmly.
V. Check whether the joint parts are firmly, the double sealant
has installed.
VI. The volume and pressure rate of the power accumulator must meet the
requirement that the BOP can be closed quickly in the Max. working pressure.
VII. Install the hydraulic line to the open/closed port per mark instruction on the
BOP.

4. Trial Operation:
It shall test by well pressure after install and inspection.
The switch of the BOP on the console twice and check whether there is any
blocks (when there drilling tool s in the well, it is prohibit close the blind ram).

5. Correct Operation:
Blind ram or pipe ram can seals the drilling tools which are the same size as the
ram to close the well when the well blowouts.
It's prohibit to discharge the pressure by opening the ram, which avoid damaging
the packing, once open the ram, check whether the locking device is in unlock
position.
It is prohibit closing the blind ram when there is drilling tool in the well.
Only is there serious leakage in the sealing location of the piston .the second
sealant is used. The amount of the seal no need too much, and just can stop the
leakage, once get the opportunity, change the sealing, immediately, it cannot always
depend on sealant to keep sealing.
After reach the purpose layer, open and close the ram pipe once a day to check
whether the switch is flexible. Once after drilling, check whether the blind ram is
flexible.
There should be one stock for the using ram and the accessory in field, once the
wing ram or accessory is damaged, it can be replaced in time.
In normal conditional, BOP is opening position as always.
All people shall be complying operation manual for use BOP.

6. Maintenance:
All the personal related to installation, operation and maintenance of BOP must
read the book.
It which has used in the field when the BOP is send to the pipe station. It should
be disassembled and cleaned. All parts should be cleaned, checked, repaired and
replaced.
The sequence of the inspection parts: locking assembly, piston, and bonnet seal.
Ram bore, BOP vertical bore, the clearance between the ram and ram cavity, plating
and welding parts, ram; body joint and outlet, major piston head, bonnet bolt;
blowhole and blind hole.

All the part must be inspect before assembly.


Testing pressure is rated working pressure, hydraulic control pressure is
8.4~10.5MPa, the pressure test is to check whether there is any leakage, when
change the ram, the control pressure to open and close the bonnet assembly is
2.1MPa~3.5MPa(300~500 psi).
Note: when install new sealing ring, the sealing ring should be treated with
greases.

7. Eliminate the Usual Trouble:


1、When the medium flows out from the joint between body and intermediate
flange connection, the cause and solution as follows:
The sealing ring of housing is damaged, change the damaged sealing ring;
2、Ram move direction is not accordance with the nameplate instruction of the
control valve, causes and solution as follows:
The BOP connection pipe-line on the BOP console is connected wrongly;
change the BOP tubing pipe location.
3、 The hydraulic control system is normal, but the ram can not reach the closed
position, the causes and solution as follows:
There is too much mud and sand in the ram cavity; clean the ram cavity.
4、The medium in the well flows into the cylinder; make the hydraulic oil contains
water, gas, and other elements, causes and solution as follows:
Sealing rings of the piston is damaged, the piston is warped or damaged; repair
or change the sealing ring or piston.
5、The ram can close, but can not hold the pressure; the causes and solution as
follows:
The element of the ram is damaged; change the element.
The upper sealing surface of the ram cavity is corroded or with groove the
causes and solution as follows; repair the upper sealing surface.

6、The Control oil flow is normal, but cannot open the ram by hydraulic pressure;
the causes and solutions follows:
Ram is blocked by mud and sand; clear mud and sand, and increase the control
pressure.
7、 There is leakage between the body and intermediate flange: the causes and
solutions follows:
a) Sealing rings of the open /close piston and housing are damaged; change the
damaged sealing ring.
b) The sealing rings between the open/close piston and intermediate flange are
damage; change the damaged sealing ring.
8、 The coating of the open /close piston is flaked when change the ram .the
causes and solutions follows:
Inspect sealing and other surfaces which contact with the open/close piston.

8. Operating Pressure:
The pressure of the open & close the ram is 8.4~10.5MPa , when change the
ram ,control pressure to open and close the bonnet is 2.1~3.5MPa (300~500 psi).

9. Storage and Aging of Rubber Goods


Rubber Elements Storage:
1、 The practice of first in first out is essential with rubber goods. There is a
natural tendency to remove parts from the front of a bin and when stock is
replenished to leave the parts that are in the back in place, in which case years might
pass before these are finally pulled out for use.
2、 It shall be put into the dark ,dry indoor room if possible ,it shall be put into the
indoor room with a air-condition and the temperature should be 20 ℃. Select the
coolest location possible and be sure that no heaters or stoves are nearby and
particularly that the direct blast from a space heater does not blow on the rubber
parts.

3 、 Rubber sealing ring shall be packed with black plastic bag and the bag
should be closed.
4、 High-voltage equipment frequently produces ozone which attacks rubber. It
cannot be stocked with grease, chemistry product. Be sure that no electrical
machinery is near the rubber goods and that drafts will not carry the atmosphere from
electrical machinery to the area in which the rubber goods are stored.
5、 Rubber sealing should be stocked with out heavy items on it.
6 、 Normal rubber storage period is one-year time. Rubber part should be
checked periodically. If there is any problem in a rubber part, it cannot be used.
7、 Store rubber goods in a relaxed position. For example, do not hang O-rings
on nails, Where possible, do not keep assemblies in stock where the rubber goods
are stretched in order to assemble them on the part. On items where the rubber is
stressed. Periodic inspection should be employed to detect any signs of aging as
quickly as possible.
8、 Keep storage as dry as possible and remove any oil, grease or other foreign
material that may accidentally get on the rubber .
9、 Do not store the rubber goods on top shelves near galvanized roofs, there
are several reasons for this one is that heat is passed through galvanized roofing
and also there is some opinion that ozone may be generated is this area.
10、 If possible, store rubber goods in building of wooden construction and on
wooden shelves. Wood is believed to scavenge ozone quite effectively.
11、 If storage for extended periods is unavoidable. Sealed containers will aid
considerably; impervious surface coverings such as " seal-peel" or waxing will help.
12、 Ram assembly is made up of ram body, top seal and packing, all of the
surfaces should be treated with Albany grease.

10. Life-times Description


Install BOP according to well control specification requirement. You must caution
to bore size, working pressure, metal material temperature class, hydrogen sulfide

concentration and rubber sealing temperature class.


All people shall be complying operation manual for use BOP. It should be
disassembled and cleaned by preset time. According to SY/T6160-1995 《 BOPs
check and maintenance》.
The type U BOP life time is five years manufactured by our company.
BOP’s lifetime dependent to the workers using. The lifetime can be reached or
exceed if the worker using it by the BOP’s manual. If the method of the operation is
incorrect, the lifetime should be reduced. It is possible to exist discovered dangerous.
BOP operation must be charged by specialist and professional person.
Operators shall be familiar with BOP working principle、specifications and process、
and also operate, repair maintain and clear troubles.
When testing without string in hole, the max close pressure do not exceed 3MPa
to prevent rubber from damage. When there is string in the well prohibit closing the
blind ram.
When the BOP stack is using, it should be installed one or two spool for the well
safety. Because it can connect the kill/check manifold and prevent BOP. If a great
deal of debris, grit, chemical matter and metal swarf in the drilling mud, It should be
abrasion and scouring the BOP body. This would reduce lifetime.
After Ram BOP installed on wellhead, wellhead equipment shall be fully tested,
standard of stest shall be according to related well control specifications, to ensure its
proper operation. The center of well head, rolling ring and hook should be alignment.It
should be abrasion the BOP body's vertical bore.
After reaching objective interval, the rams should be opened and closed one time
every day to see if they are flexible lock in normal condition. After the drill string is
pulled out of the well, blind ram open and close test is needed.
The BOP stack with annual bop should be operated according to following
method in an emergency. First to close annual BOP, then close ram BOP, use it's
feather that it has been seal well for long time, finally open annual BOP to avoid the
annual BOP worked for long time.
When the ram BOP has been closed, don't suit to move drilling rod, don't rotate

the drilling rod. If must move drilling rod, a accumulator must be added into the
hydraulic system.
After open the ram BOP, you must check if the rams open fully, to avoid
scratching ram.
Light hydraulic oil is the recommended operating fluid for type U preventers. Any
type except flue oil, which causes rubber seals to swell and deteriorate. The use of
water as an operating medium is satisfactory provided soluble oil is added to
prevent corrosion and antifreeze is added when necessary.
There is a secondary sealing mechanism in immediate flange, Packing plastic do
not loading during transports.
Lipped seal rings and O rings are used in seal positions in Ram BOP. The quality
of the sealing rings direct influence with the quality of BOP.
The connection of the upper of are API standardized Stud connection , the
connection of the lower of Ram BOP are API standardized flange connection. All The
ring gasket grooves are welding with stainless steel, the material organize is much
softer, it stand on land, it must add a plate isolated between the land. The upper
studded bore must add a plate isolated with rainwater. The thread of studded bore
has corrosives easily. It must coat thread oil to protect.
