The Sprinkler Problem

Student name: Due date: Monday 27 September @ 14:30

Subject & Grade: MYP3 Mathematics

Unit 1 Title: Environmental Geometry
Key Concept: Form
Related Concept(s): Justification, Quantity and Measurement
Global Context: Globalization and sustainability
Statement of Inquiry: Geometry defines and solves real world problems
Your Task: Determine the optimal arrangement of sprinklers so you can provide water to a sports field
without wasting water. Be sure you consider all the details in the problem. Determine the cost of your
solution using the given details. Present your work in a mathematical report.

Details & Conditions:

1. This is individual work and not to be done as a group or with another student.
2. Your report must be completed in Microsoft Word and then uploaded as a Google Document.
3. Use the equations tab in Microsoft Word to write your equations and work.
4. Your equations/work should be in the centre of the page.
5. Your report should include a title.
6. Your name and grade level should be at the bottom of each page as a footer and should also include the page
number.
7. Any tables/ pictures/ graphs should have captions below them indicating what they are representing.
8. You are able to use your calculator, however, you must show all of your work.

Problem Details and Guidance (see diagram on next page):

● You may use any quantity and combination of the available sprinklers (3 radial sizes).
● There are 3 sizes of sprinklers with radial ranges of 15m, 20m, and 25m. (Radial means radius)
● You may not overlap sprinklers, or water the same area more than once.
● Piping costs $40 per meter. How did you determine the length of piping required?
● You must create/include a scale diagram in 2-D of your optimal configuration of piping and
sprinklers.
● What % of the field were you able to water?
● What degree of accuracy are you using? Why?
● Does your solution make sense in real life? Why?
The Sprinkler Problem

You have a sports field that measures 85 meters by 75 meters. You need to water it
to keep it in good condition for football and other sports.

You need to connect a Pipe System, which begins at the “source”, then runs along
the perimeter of the field to connect to all of the sprinklers.
