BTMG 521 Assignment 2 Due date: 17 Oct 2022

1. Solve the unknowns in each of the following simultaneous equations. Use in

each case the method in brackets and give the coordinates of the point(s) of
intersection.

1.1 8𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 3 = −2𝑥 − 2𝑦 (Elimination) (3)

1.2 𝑦 + 2𝑥 − 18 = 0
𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 33 = 0 (Substitution) (3)

1.3 3𝑥 − 6𝑦 = 0
2𝑥 = 4 (Graphically) (3)

2. John paid R90 for a pair of pants and three shirts at the Discount Store. In total
the three shirts cost R24 less than the pants. Determine how much he paid for
one shirt and how much he paid for the pair of pants. (4)

3. Solve simultaneously for x and y if:

𝑥 2 − 2𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2 = 1
3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 1 (4)

4. Find the coordinates of the points of intersection of the following functions by

solving the two equations algebraically. Do not draw the graphs.
𝑥 − 𝑦 = 3 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 × 𝑦 = 28 (3)
5. A circle and a straight line intersect at (-2 ; 6) and (6 ; -2). Determine the
equation of the circle and of the straight line. (3)

6. The breadth of a rectangle is x cm long and the length is 10cm longer than the
breadth. If the perimeter of the rectangle is 140cm, find the values for the length
and the breadth of the rectangle. (3)

7. Sketch the feasible region for the following system of equations:

5𝑥 + 2𝑦 ≥ 10
𝑥 + 3𝑦 ≥ 6
3𝑥 + 4𝑦 ≥ 12
𝑥≥0
𝑦≥0 (4)
8. An entrepreneur manufactures braai drums. He builds two types: an ordinary
model and a De Luxe model. With the labor and equipment that he has
available, he can build 150 ordinary and 120 De Luxe models per month, but not
more than a total of 200 drums per month. He has fixed orders of 40 ordinary
and 10 De Luxe models per month. The guy makes R50 profit on each ordinary
braai drum and R100 on every deluxe model.
8.1 Write down all the constraints for this scenario if one needs to determine the
number of each model braai drum the guy needs to manufacture per month.
(5)
8.2 Write down the objective function for the total amount of profit the guy makes
per month. (1)

9. A manufacturer produces two types of soap, A and B. He can sell a maximum of

12 boxes of A and 8 boxes of B per day. It takes 30 minutes to manufacture a
box of A and 1 hour to manufacture a box of B. The plant is in production for a
maximum of 9 hours per day. He has enough material available to manufacture
a maximum of 14 boxes altogether per day. The profit on A is R20 per box and
on B the profit is R30 per box. Let x be the number of boxes of soap A that the
manufacturer produces per day and let y be the number of boxes of soap B that
he produces per day.
The major constraints are:
𝑥 ≤ 12 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦 ≤ 8
30𝑥 + 60𝑦 ≤ 540
𝑥 + 𝑦 ≤ 14

9.1 Write down one other constraint and then use the constraints to graph the
feasible region. (4)
9.2 Hence, write down the objective function and determine the number of
boxes of each type that should be manufactured daily to obtain maximum profit.
Clearly show on your graph at which point the maximum occurs. (3)
9.3 Calculate the maximum profit. (1)

10. The purchase price of a car is R250 000. If the value of the car depreciates at
the rate of 5% p.a., calculate its depreciated value in five years’ time on:
10.1 A straight-line basis (2)
10.2 A reducing balance method (2)

11. Cyril wants to buy a car costing R192000. He takes out a loan for five years with
interest charged at 12% per annum, compounded monthly. Calculate the monthly
instalments that Cyril will have to pay on the car loan. (3)

12. How long (how many months) will it take mr Reynders to accumulate one million
Rand if he invests R750 at the end of each month and is offered interest at a
fixed rate of 11,4% p.a. compounded monthly? (3)
