Tujuan Pembelajaran:

What is a Descriptive Text?


A descriptive text usually focuses on describing a single location, object, event, person, or place.
Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing. It is important for you to
learn about descriptive text such as tourism destinations or famous historical buildings because when
you want to go to such places, you will need an exact location and description of those places so that
you are not lost and misdirected. So, it really helps your journey to be more effective and efficient
because you know exactly where to go and find those places.

Description is about sensory experience – how something looks, sounds, or tastes. Mostly it is about
visual experience; but description also deals with other kinds of perception. It endeavors to engage
all five of the reader’s senses to evoke the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feel of the text’s
subject.

Thus, we can conclude that a descriptive text is meaningful text that describes the experience related
to the senses, such as what shape, sound, or taste is. Most descriptive text is about visual experience,
but in fact the experience other than the sense of sight can also be employed in composing a
descriptive text.

Purpose of Descriptive text


1. To describe a particular person, thing or place.
2. To describe person, thing or place in specific details.

Language Feature of Descriptive Text


1. Specific participant: has a certain object which is unique and not common (usually there is
only one of it), for example: my best friend, uncle Tom, etc.
2. The use of adjective to clarify the noun, for example: a beautiful girl, a handsome man, etc.
3. The use of simple present tense as it tells the fact of the object being described.
4. Action verb: verbs that show an activity, for example: grow, wear, etc.

What is Generic Structure of a Descriptive Text?


1. Identification: the introduction of a person, place, animal, or object being described.
2. Description: the description of something such as animal, things, place, or person by stating
its features, forms, colors, or anything related to what the writer describes.

Since this topic is about describing places, then we will focus on examples and exercises on
describing places. This is a generic structure of descriptive text about places:

Pink Beach

Pink Beach or Pantai Merah Muda is one of the beaches in Komodo island, East Nusa
Tenggara. The Beach is located in the small village Sekaroh, Jerowaru East Lombok. The beach is
called Pink Beach because the sand beach is pink.
The pink color of its beach is a mixture of white sand beach colors mixed with crushed
coral, shells, calcium carbonate from marine invertebrates that are very small, and also
Foraminifera, microscopic amoeba that has a red body shell.
Besides sand Beaches distinctive pink color, this Beach also has a very impressive natural
scenery. Surrounded by cliffs – cliffs high. The view from the top of the cliff will also make you
fascinated with the beautiful panorama below the cliffs. Aroma typical sea water,caresses breeze
and the sound of waves hitting the reef makes the heart anyone who visit here be quiet.
Pink Beach has a fairly quiet flow with waves that are very small,so cool to play and do no
harm. If you could go snorkeling, you will be amazed by the coral reefs are very beautiful.
At Pink Beach, there are so many marine organisms. No fewer than 1,000 species of fish, 260

species of coral, and 70 species of sponge can be found here. Having so much marine life, this
place is a proper spot for snorkeling and diving for sea sports lovers.

GRAMMAR FOCUS
There is a sentence structure in the descriptive text about place. When describing places we usually use
the following formula:

a. S + to be + adjective

Example:
Jakarta is a big city.
Jakarta is very hot.

b. S + has + N

Example:
Jakarta has busy streets.
Jakarta has luxurious shops.

When you describe a place you can use the verb:


1. There is (untuk benda atau orang yang jumlahnya tunggal)
Example: In my room, there is a bed.
2. There are (untuk sesuatu yang jamak atau lebih dari satu)
Example: There are many people in this place.

When you describe a place, you can also use some prepositions of place. Some prepositions of place is
as follows:

behind In top of In the (south/north/east/west) of
In front of In bottom of Next to

Parangtritis Beach

Parangtritis Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Yogyakarta. It located in the south of
Bantul Regency. Parangtritis Beach is next to Parangkusumo Beach. In the east of Parangtritis there
is an elongated cliff.
There is a lot of beautiful scenery. Although just a few trees in there, many beautiful corals in
there. Besides that, the wind is very strong. The Wave in Parangtritis beach is also very big, so no one
is playing surf like in Bali Beach and a little or nothing person sail in there. In when afternoon, the
weather is very hot. But, in when morning and evening, there are very cool. In the morning, we can
see the sunrise and in the evening, we can see the sunset from Parangtritis.
Parangtritis beach is a very large beach. So, if we want to go around there, we can rent a gig there.
Besides that, we can play sand beach, playing kite, etc. There are It’s also many souvenir sellers
around there. Parangtritis beach is very beautiful, so it’s a good place for refreshing.

Petruk Cave
Petruk cave is one of the leading tourist attractions in Kebumen, Central Java. The cave is
located in the dukuh Mandayana Candirenggo Village, Ayah District, Kebumen regency. In the petruk
cave there is no lighting that illuminates the cave. It is still very natural cave so that petruk cave is very
dark to be entered. Petruk cave’s name is taken from the punokawan of puppet characters that is Petruk.
The cave Named Petruk cave because the length of cave is as long as petruk’s nose.
In the cave there are 3 floors that are the first is a basic cave, Hindu caves and Petruk cave. The
base cave is a short cave which is just 100 meters away. The cave is used for tourist attractions. Hindu
cave is part of the cave that is usually used to put offerings to the ancestor. Inside Petruk cave there are
so many stalactites and stalagmites which are really awesome. If you want to explore this cave, you must
be led by guides who are ready to take you through the cave. After arriving at the end of the cave, you
can see the beach or waterfall located near at the end of the cave.

Identification/introduction:
Borobudur temple is the biggest Budha temple in Indonesia. It is located in Magelang, Central
Java.
Description:
Borobudur temple consists of six square floors and three circular floors. On each level of the
floor, there are a lot of relief panels and Buddha statues spread around it. Borobudur temple is
interesting place. In there we can explore the entire complex, take a picture, see sunrise, buy
souvenirs, and enjoy the beautiful view from above. A lot of people visit it every day.
