Weather: INCLINED STADIA SIGHTS

Location/s:

Objectives: To determine the vertical and horizontal distances in accordance with the
stadia measurement in an engineer’s transit or theodolite
Intended Learning Outcomes: To be familiar with the methods in utilizing stadia measurements in
determining horizontal and vertical distances

1 Engineer’s Transit
Instruments

1 Stadia/Levelling Rod
:

1 Chalk/Marker

Determine the instrument’s stadia interval factor.

On one end of the designated line set up and level the instrument such as at
point A. Then determine the height of instrument (HI).

Direct the rodman to hold vertically a leveling or stadia rod at the other end of
Procedures:

the line (point B) and take a foresight on the rod.

Observe through the telescope the apparent location of the stadia hairs on the
rod and record the upper stadia hair reading and the lower stadia reading.

Also note the apparent location of the horizontal cross hair on the rod and record
this as the rod reading.
Read the vertical angle and record this quantity. Indicate its corresponding pin.
An angle of elevation is positive (+) angle and an angle of depression is a
negative (-) angle.
