Title : Green Redemption: A family’s Eco-Adventure

SCENE 1

Mom cleans table. Dad read newspapers. Maya reads while eating. Marissa is also eating.

MOM
Maya….Maya!…Maya Natasha! I know multi-tasking is a good trait, but reading while eating can
kill you sooner than you think.

MAYA
Sorry mom, it’s too intriguing.

MOM
Too intriguing to disrespect food? Come on Maya… put it away.
Maya stops reading and focus on her food.

MARISSA
Mom. How can reading while eating kill us?

MOM
Well, we tend to pay less attention to how our body react to the food we eat, so we eat more than we
need or we simply might choke. (Pause. Turn to Maya) Maya, where did you get that book, though?
I haven’t seen it before.

MAYA
Today, my friend Aaliyah and I were catching up and the conversation leads to the book. She said it
was good. So, I asked if I can borrow.

MOM
What’s the book about?

MAYA
It’s about a boy who tries to save the world by educating other to stop global warming. Very inspir-
ing. I want to be just like him.

MOM
It’s good to hear. Not all hero wears a cape.
Marissa gets up after she finishes eating and goes towards the living room

MOM
Marissa, leaving so soon? We’re so rich we have helper in the house?
(Maya continues eating. Marissa makes boring face.)
MOM
And why didn’t you eat your vegetables?

MARISSA
I’m full.

MOM
But you didn’t even touch a bit. Finish it.

MARISSA
No.

MOM
This girl I ought to-

DAD
Let her be, it’s just broccoli.

MOM
This girl never finishes her food! It’s all a wast-
(Opening the trash can and about to throw the food out)

MAYA
Wait, Mom! Don’t throw the food away.

MOM
Oh, do you want it?

MAYA
Eww, I don’t want her scraps! I meant you shouldn’t throw it out because then it will be an actual
waste.

MOM
Then what should I do with it?

MAYA
We should compose it.

MOM
What’s composing?

MAYA
No mom. Composting. Composting is when you take organic materials and turn it into nutrient-rich
soil amendment or mulch. Then it turns into compost, which is a good organic fertiliser for plants.

MOM
Which I think is a good idea. Where did you learn that?

MAYA :
From this. (showing the book on her lap)

MOM
What else can I compost?

MAYA
You could use the scraps you got from cooking.

MOM
Owhhh, that’s great. Then I wouldn’t have to buy fertilisers for my garden anymore

SCENE 2

(Dad is raking dried leaves and Maya is reading at the backyard.)

DAD
Maya, could you get me my lighter?

MAYA
Why? You’re not smoking, right?

DAD
No dear, I’m going to light these dried leaves up.

MAYA
Wait! No dad. You can’t.

DAD
Why?

MAYA
It could cause air pollution. Besides we can turn it into compost!

DAD
Oh yeah, I forgot we are doing that compost thing. Wait, this can turn into compost too?
MAYA
Yeah! Almost anything organic can turn into compost.

Dad
Oh really? I didn’t know that.

MAYA
It’s okay, dad. I’m new to this too. Let’s not waste together. (Sees a chicken and gasps) Dad, I al-
most forgot! We could also turn the chicken’s waste into compost! Composting animal manure can
help improve soil health, water-holding capacity, and biological properties.

DAD
That’s a good idea

SCENE 3

(Marissa is in the kitchen)

(Maya comes in the kitchen and sees Marissa cutting some fruits)

MAYA
He-

( Marissa stands and goes towards the trash bin and tries to throw out the unwanted pieces)

MAYA
Marissa!

(Marissa jumps and turns around surprised)

MARISSA
What are you shouting for!?

MAYA
You know why!!?

MARISSA
What why?!

MAYA
Composting?!!

MARISSA
Uhuh, so?
MAYA
Those orange peels can be composted!

MARISSA
It’s not like some orange peels are going to make that much of a difference!

MAYA
No! Every little piece counts.

MARISSA
Yeah yeah…

(Marissa continues cutting the fruits and puts the peels in the “to be composted” container while
side-eyeing her sister)

(Maya is standing with her hands crossed with a stern look on her face)

SCENE 4

(Mom is gardening, Marissa is feeding the chickens, Maya is reading her book and Dad is fixing
the fence)

ELYNA
Oh, hello there, neighbour. What are you guys up to?

Mom
Oh hi, Elyna, didn’t see you there. I’m just doing some gardening.

ELYNA
Same here.
(Both of them giggle)

ELYNA
Oh yeah, I forgot to ask you, we’ve wanted to ask you since last week but I forgot. What’s that bin
over there?

MOM
That one? That’s-

MAYA
That one there is our composting bin! It’s so that we can make some organic fertiliser! It was my
idea you know?

ELYNA
Organic fertiliser? We just use the one from the store! What’s the difference?
MAYA
The one you’re using is chemical fertiliser! Chemical fertilisers can cause damage to the soil. It can
cause soil degradation, nitrogen leaching and soil compaction. Moreover, the overuse of it can
harden the soil. Whereas organic fertiliser does none of that.

ELYNA
Wow, I didn’t know they could cause that. I’ll take your advice dear. (Turns towards her house and
yells) Honey, don’t buy anymore fertilisers. Let’s make them instead!

MR DEF
What? I didn’t hear you!

(Elyna turns to MAYA)

Elyna
Ugh, just ignore him

MR DEF
Honey, what did you say?! (shouting from afar)

DAD
I don’t think we can
