I. Early life & education


A. In J. R. R. Tolkien’s early life was a troubled one with emotional distress and
insecurity
B. His father Aruther tolkien died of rheumatic fever on feburary the 15 1896, only
leaving a few hundred pounds
C. Mabel Tolkien homeschooled J. R. R. and his brothers for a time in the hamlet of
Sarehole
D. After J. R. R. Tolkien’s mother died the brothers were put under the care of
Father Francis Morgan who arranged them to be boarded with a distant relative
and a aqunititance of his own
E. At the age of 16 J. R. R. Tolkiens fell in love with Edith Bratt, but when his
guardian found out about this he made sure they were separated until J. R. R.
Tolkien came of age.
II. THe War and his early academic career
A. One March 22 1916 J. R. R. Tolkien married his love Edith, but later he was sent
to france to join the army as a signals officer
B. In the war one of his closest friends got killed when the battle started
C. He would later succumbed to trench fever on October 27 and was sent back to
england the following month
D. Tolkien’s other career in the 1920s was also very successful.
E. Tolkien later published a magazine about beowulf, the monsters & the critics,
which was considered a turing point for studying the poem
III. His Works
A. His first and good book was The hobbit a epic fantasy adventure story
B. He based it off of early germanic mythology inhabited by mythical creatures,
dwarves and heroes.
C. Tolkien even went as far as making a world history based on the world of middle
earth
D. Tolkien in this book invented a mythical race called the hobbits, who act like
respectable british citizens
E. Later He would make a sequel to the hobbit, the lord of the ring.
IV. His works part 2
A. Tolkien then makes a sequel to the hobbit, the lord of the rings, which is just
fantastic
B. It is about when the one ring is a evil artifact used by a long dead dark warlord
sauron, which could bring him back if not destroyed
C. It also introduced a anti quest, to throw away or destroy something rather then
getting something
D. In this case the one ring had to be destroy for no one could be trusted with it, not
even gandalf himself can safe keep it
E. So they send out frodo to drop the ring into the lava of mount doom!
V. Conclusion
A. At the end of Tolkien's life he had amassed a fortune of 190,577 pounds
B. J. R R Tolkien he retired to his rooms in Mertage Collage and died shortly after of
a chest infection
C. Today his books are praised by the critics and they were turned into fantastic
movies for people to watch
D. Both Tolkien and his wife were buried at Wolvercote cemetery outside of Oxford
E. Today Tolkien is remembered as a great author who made some great books,
and introduced the fantasy genre to readers around the world.
