FINAL REPORT

5-DAYS TRAINING PROGRAM

ON

INTRODUCTION TO BRIDGE
DESIGN
September 19, 2023 to November 14, 2023

By

Samy Muhammad Reza, PEng.

BACKGROUND
Dr. Raquib Ahsan, one of the advisers of DDC Ltd., discussed with me the possibility of my
contribution to enhance the capability of the DDC team in bridge design. I suggested that
introductory training sessions for beginners in bridge design would be helpful at the initial
stage. Finally, working on bridge design projects with the opportunity of own decision-
making will fully enhance the capability of the team in bridge design. Then I was honored to
have the opportunity to share my experience in bridge design with the engineers of DDC Ltd.
through five training sessions.

TRAINING OBJECTIVE
The objectives of this five-day training were as follows:

• To introduce different types of brides and select the appropriate type of bridge
• To demonstrate the steps of bridge design
• To introduce design parameters with references, so that, participants may follow the
guidelines while designing a bridge
• To demonstrate modeling and design of a sample bridge using CSiBRIDGE software

PARTICIPANTS’ PROFILE
This program has been arranged for 22 participants. However, 14 to 17 participants
participated in the first four sessions. The last class was the modeling of a bridge using
computers and was taken in two parts due to computer number limitations.

The participants may be categorized into four different levels:

a) Involved in the bridge design project

b) Involved in the design of buildings
c) Site supervision engineer
d) AutoCAD operator

The training program was intended for all levels of participants.

VENUE AND DATE
The training was organized at DDC Center, Mohakhali from September 19, 2023 to
November 14, 2023.

SUBJECTS COVERED IN SESSIONS

Session 1:
• Introduction to bridges
• Types of bridges
• Selection of appropriate type of bridge
• Bridge geometry parameters
• Clearances

Session 2:
• Loads on bridges

Session 3:
• Components of bridges
• Load transfer mechanism of bridges
• Structural analysis of bridge
• Design of RC girder bridge

Session 4:
• Skew bridge
• Basics of PC girder bridge
• Bearings and substructure

Session 5:
• Introduction to CSiBridge Software
• Modeling, analysis, and design of a sample RC girder bridge using CSiBridge

OUTCOME OF TRAINING
The training material was prepared for participants for a comprehensive understanding of
bridge engineering. The initial sessions seemed a little difficult for the participants not
involved with bridge engineering. However, with the progress of time, the sessions became
livelier as the participants were getting more familiar with the subject. The score of the
quizzes also indicates this matter. In the final session, most of the participants showed their
interest in learning more about bridge engineering. Therefore, this program awakened the
interest of participants in bridge engineering as well as provided them basic knowledge to
start designing bridges.
