The causes of poverty in India are mainly high

rampant corruption. The ever-increasing
population is the main cause of many ills of Indian
society.
Religious attitude, child marriages, preference for
male child, joint family system, illiteracy and to
some extent the agricultural economy are the main
causes of population increase. The growth of
population has a direct effect on the standards of
living of the people

DRUG
ADDICTION
9
Millions of Indians are dependent on alcohol,
cannabis, and opiates, and drug misuse is a
pervasive phenomenon in Indian society, says a
new report, published jointly by the UN Office on
Drugs and Crime and India's Ministry of Social
Justice.
Alcohol, cannabis, opium, and heroin are the
major drugs misused in India, says the report.
Buprenorphine, propoxyphene, and heroin are the
most commonly injected drugs.
In the national household survey more than 40
000 men and boys (aged 12 to 60 years) were
interviewed, while subsidiary studies looked at
drug misuse among women.

CORRUPTION
10
Corruption is a significant problem in
India that has been prevalent for decades. It
affects all levels of society, from the poorest
to the richest.
Corruption in India can take many forms,
including bribery, embezzlement, nepotism,
and misuse of public resources. Corruption in
India has resulted in the misallocation of
resources, poor governance, and a lack of
accountability. It also leads to a loss of trust in
public institutions, weakens the rule of law,
and hinders economic development
