COMPREHENSION PASSAGE

Patriotism is how we show our love and our readiness to serve our country. If we are patriotic,we must
be loyal to our country and not our ethnic group.Patriots must speak well of their country at all times. If
Patriots are outside their country, they must not say or do anything that will harm the country, even if
they are not happy with the Government.

If Nigerians are called to serve Nigeria in anyway, either in time of peace or war, they should be ready
to serve. If there had been no patriotism on the part of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Nigeria would not
exist today as she does. A patriotic person must place the country above the State or ethnic group.

As citizens of Nigeria,we should be loyal to our governments----State and Federal. We should pay our
taxes, defend our nation at all times, show respect for our leaders and all national symbols,be honest in
all our dealings with fellow citizens and, above all, keep and defend the Constitution or laws of the
nation.

Being a good citizen also means respect for national identity. That is,a patriotic citizen respects the
symbols of a Nation, those things by which a nation is known or identified. The main symbols of a nation
are the national anthem, the national flag, the coat of arms, the armed Forces,a single currency, common
boundaries and cultural artefacts,as well as the language we speak and the way we dress, which identify
us as Nigerians. Respect for national identity gives if a sense of unity. If we are not loyal to our
country,we will not even know if Nigeria's enemies are planning to attack the country. There is a saying
that if you call your own Calabash a useless one, other people will use it as a refuse bin. So,if you do not
love your country, other people may do anything to it without your knowledge.

COMPREHENSION PASSAGE

Drug trafficking is the global illegal trade involving the cultivation, production, distribution and sale of
substances that are subject to drug prohibition laws. Drug trafficking is globally regarded as the most
serious of drug offences. However, sentencing often depends on the type, the quantity trafficked, where
the drugs are sold and how they are distributed. For example,if the drugs are sold to underage
people, then the penalties for trafficking may be harsher than in other circumstances.

In many countries, drug smuggling carries severe penalties. These include lengthy periods of
imprisonment, flogging and even death penalty(in Singapore, Malaysia,e.t.c).In December 2005,a 25
year old Australia drug trafficker was hanged in Singapore. In 2010,two people were sentenced to death
in Malaysia for trafficking 1 kilogram(2.2pounds) of cannabis into the country.

Drug trafficking has a variety of huge effects on society. The countries of drug production have been
seen as the worst affected by prohibition. Countries receiving the illegally-imported substances are also
affected. For example,Ecuador has allegedly absorbed up to 300,000 refugees from Columbia who are
running from guerrillas, paramilitaries and drug lords. While some applied for asylum, others are still
illegal and the drugs that pass from Colombia through Ecuador to other parts of South America create
economic and social problems.

In many countries worldwide, the illegal drug trade is thought to be directly connected to violent
crimes such as murder;this is especially true in developing countries, and is also an issue for many
developed countries worldwide. In the late 1990s in the United States, the Federal Bureau of
investigation (FBI) estimated that 5percent of murders were drug-related. A report by the UK
government's drug strategy unit that was subsequently leaked to the press, stated that due to the
expensive price of the highly addictive drugs, heroin and cocaine, drug use was responsible for the great
majority of crimes, including 85 percent of shoplifting,70-80 percent of burglaries and 54 percent of
robberies.

Although Nigeria is not a consumer country, people are involved in drug trafficking because of its
high returns. Drug trafficking started in the 1960s when some musicians hid cannabis in their drums, sold
them to users in foreign countries and came back rich. Later they changed to cocaine and heroin
because because they were easy to sell. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency(NDLEA) was set up
to apprehend drug couriers and their sponsors(barons).
