1 8 DC Input + 6 RLY Output Module (2414)

This is a NEXGEN-2000 PLC family I/O module. It is 8-point DC
Input + 6-point relay output module which accepts 24 VDC inputs.
Inputs to be wired for sink type of interface. The digital input
module receives signals from various sensors like push buttons,
proximity switches, limit switches, etc. These signals are filtered,
then optically isolated and converted to digital signals. These
signals in digital format are then sent to the Processor Module. The
outputs are electro-mechanical relay contacts which control 24-
240 VAC and 24 VDC switching.

2 Module Wiring
The front side of module is provided with two 10-pin terminal blocks for wiring of field inputs.
These are easily removable connectors, which facilitate replacement of faulty module
without removing field wiring. The LED indications for input channel status are provided on
the Processor module. The status indication LED for a channel glows when that input is
sensed by Processor as TRUE. This module can be inserted in any of the I/O slots.
The inputs are grouped in four groups of 4 channels. All inputs can be connected for sink
type of operation.

Total two common points (G1and G2) are provided; each one for a group of four
consecutive inputs. Input devices can be connected for sink type of operation. This can be
done in group of four inputs.

The inputs are protected against high voltage transients by optical isolation circuitry inside
input module. But it is always better to take certain care regarding wiring of the inputs to
reduce the effect of electrical noise such as inductive load switching. All the input modules of
same type should be grouped together.

User should take care to avoid over voltage. User should avoid application of
AC voltage to 24 V DC input module. Such cases may damage the module
permanently.

In all 6 outputs are divided in 4 groups of either single or two points. Common points (C0,
C1, C2 and C3) per group are provided to connect either 24-250 VAC or 24 VDC supply.
Connect output device ( AC or DC as per specifications) to output point as shown in figure
with other terminal of output device connected to Neutral or GND.

User should ensure that total load current per common should not exceed
1 Amp and it should not exceed 6 Amp per module.

No external power supply is required for energizing relays on module.

Recommendations for using relay type of outputs –

Use external RC snubber across relay contact for AC loads.

Use external Free-Wheeling diode across DC loads.
It is always recommended to insert external fuse protection (1 Amp) for
each output to avoid damage to output relay contact in case of short circuit
at output device side.

Maximum voltage between any two pins not to exceed 250 VAC. Hence
connection to two and three phase supply not permitted, if line voltage exceeds
110 VAC.

Replacement of Module:
From user safety point of view, replacement of live modules is not allowed.
Module replacement is allowed only after PLC and machine power is switched
off and the voltage at terminal blocks is confirmed to be safe.
Switching off PLC power does not guarantee that a voltage at terminal blocks is
also turned off.
In order to ensure that user is consciously removing the module from the slot,
HV-Clips are provided at top surface of the base rack. This is safety feature in
additional to locking clips provided towards fascia of the module. Thus before
unlocking the HV-Clip for the module, user must ensure that the power supply
for actuating the field devices connected at output terminals is turned off.

3 Programmable Filter Time Feature

In some applications, there is requirement of sensing the fast changing inputs. In
such a case, the input status change may go undetected, if the channel has filter time
of greater than 10ms. Thus in 2414 module, the filter time for each channel can be
programmable from 1 to 255 ms, in steps of 1 ms. There is a provision of defining
‘Programmable Filter Time’ by writing required value to a register byte on module at
address MMB5000, using ‘IM_Write’ function. Individual channel can be configured
for applying either default filter time of 10ms or the programmable filter time as per
value written at MMW5000.
The filter time configuration for individual channel corresponds to individual bits of
‘Programmable Filter Time Mask’ defined at address MMW5002. The required value
for MMW5002 can be written by using ‘IM_Write’ function, as shown below –

4 Pulse Catch Feature

4.1 Overview
The pulse catch feature can be used for first eight digital input points (Ch-0 to Ch-7).
The pulse catch feature allows you to capture high-going pulses or low-going pulses
that are of such a short duration that they would not always be monitored when the
Processor module reads the digital inputs during input scan. When pulse catch is
enabled for an input, a change in state of the input is latched and held until the next
input scan. This ensures that a pulse, which lasts for a short period of time, is caught
and held until the Processor module reads the inputs during its input scan.

User can individually enable the pulse catch operation for each of the digital inputs.

Individual inputs have either default (10ms) or user settable (1-255ms) filter time. If
an input is configured for Pulse-Catch functionality, then input filter time for that
channel is set to least possible duration of less than 100µs, irrespective of user
settable value.

The following figure shows schematic of digital input channel configured as Pulse-
Catch input –

4.2 Configuration
Pulse-catch functionality for individual channels can be configured by writing
appropriate value to module register MMB5074, using ‘IM_Write’ function as follows

The 2616 module will detect either rising or falling edge of input. Then it will elongate
the pulse as per ‘Pulse Elongation Period’ defined at MMB5076 on the module. It
can be configured by application program by using ‘IM_Write’ function. It can be set
in the range of 1-255 ms. The ‘Pulse Elongation Period’ should be typically greater
than twice the maximum scan time of the Processor module.

Once a rising or falling edge of an input pulse is detected, the module will ignore any
further changes, till the elongation period is elapsed. At the end of elongation period,
the module will read the physical input and will start monitoring for next change of
state. Thus both rising and falling edges will get latched for a minimum duration as
per ‘Pulse Elongation Period’ and will be recognized by the Processor module during
its input scan. However, any changes in input occurring during elongation period will
not be transparent to the Processor module.

Page 12 of 22 Document No.: ED-2002-211/V1.0
Messung Systems NEXGEN PLC I/O Modules

4.3 Reset Operation

There is provision to reset the latched input by sending a reset state through
IM_WRITE function by application. Individual bits of MMB6000 are used as reset bits
for Ch-0 to Ch-7, as follows –

Bit-7 Bit-6 Bit-5 Bit-4 Bit-3 Bit-2 Bit-1 Bit-0

Ch-7 Ch-6 Ch-5 Ch-4 Ch-3 Ch-2 Ch-1 Ch-0

If application sets the Reset-bit, then module will terminate the elongation period and
will get ready to catch next pulse. The module will take required action on rising edge
of Reset-Bit image and then it will be cleared by module itself. Thus module will be
ready to catch next pulse immediately after receiving reset from application, instead
of waiting for application to clear the reset-bit.

The ‘Pulse Elongation Period’ will be in the range of 1-255 ms, settable with
resolution of 1ms. If this parameter value is set to zero, then latched pulse will never
be reset by module on its own, but application has to use IM_WRITE function to write
appropriate value at MMB6000, for resetting the latched pulse.

5 Troubleshooting
This section explains the input section of digital input module and diagnostic
flowchart.

5.1 Input Section

The figures shown below indicate input section of 24 VDC input module
along with connection of PNP and NPN type of input devices. The term
'sourcing' and 'sinking' applicable to input modules refer to the manner in
which input devices are wired.

This 2414 module has facility of connecting ‘Sink Type’ configuration only.

In following figure, PNP type of input device is connected for sink type of operation. In this
connection, + 24 VDC is switched to input terminal and DC ground is connected to common
terminal of input module. The input device is said to be providing current to input module. As
input module is receiving the current, it is said to be sinking.

Messung Systems NEXGEN PLC I/O Modules

In following figure, open-collector NPN type of input device interface is

indicated.

However, the input status is inverted w.r.t sensor activation.

In this connection, open-collector NPN type of device is connected in parallel

with input terminal and respective common ternial. The +24 VDC is
connected through an external pull-up resistor R4, to input terminal as well
as open collector of NPN type of device.

If the input device is activated, then it will sink the current and the potential at
input terminal will be same as that of DC ground. Thus input will be sensed
as FALSE.

If the NPN device is inactive, then the potential at input terminal will be
almost +24 VDC. Actual voltage at input terminal will be less than +24 VDC
by drop across R4, which need to to be designed for minimal drop and at the
same time R4 should not be so low that it will cause more than specified
maximum current for NPN device, when the device is in active state.
Thus when device is inactive, the input is sensed as TRUE.

Application program developer shall consider this inverted logic image of the
input, during project development.
