Domain 2 The Classroom Environment

Dana created an encompassing environment of respect and rapport within the classroom. She was
respectful and organized, creating a productive environment that enabled students to take
intellectual risks and maximize learning time. Students were engaged in conversations throughout
the lesson: What did I get? I saw a lot of people working on… What do I need to do? Is this the
only way to solve the problem? This is how I did it; how did you do it? Turn to your neighbor and
explain how you did it. Also, a reminder that you can check with your partner for answers. The
lesson in standard algorism involved conversations within the classroom that created thoughtful
interactions between teacher and students and among students.

Students exhibit politeness and respect towards one another. Dana managed students who disagreed
by asking follow-up questions such as, do our partners have to use the same strategies as we used?
Dana asked the students to explain to her how students’ partners got to their answers; one student
responded that he thinks adding bigger numbers makes it easier. Such questions created and
maintained an environment in which students’ diverse backgrounds, identities, strengths, and
challenges were respected.
