Domain 3 Instruction and Communication

Component 3b: Using Questioning and Discussion Techniques addresses the quality of questions,
discussion techniques, and student participation.

The purpose of the lesson was made clear. Dana engaged students with various types of open-ended
questions to check for understanding. Dana used the board to write several base words. She placed
suffixes to be explored by the students. Students were able to practice the three suffixes before the
lesson was furthered.

Students placed their hands under their chins to feel the base word and its number of syllables to
indicate the proper suffix. This is a great way to extend the lesson for kinesthetic learners. The
overhead was used to enlarge the rules for adding suffixes and double consonants and to connect
students to standard written words in English.

Dana had students use sound to hear words and participate in slow enunciation to understand words
when adding a suffix. This is great for auditorial learners. Dana communicated throughout the
lesson the three suffixes that were the lesson's content. This instruction helped students stay on task
for the purpose of the lesson. Her communication was consistent and concise.

Students were engaged in instruction and allowed time to understand the lesson's content. Dana
engaged in flexibility and responsiveness to meet the needs of her students. The lesson ended with
a short BINGO game to support student learning and engagement.
