AGROMETEOROLOGICAL

PRACTICES AND OBSERVATIONS

CE 405 – HYDR0LOGY: EXERCISE 1
WEATHER VS CLIMATE

WEATHER

The condition of the atmosphere at

any particular time and spaces

CLIMATE

Represents the accumulation of daily

and seasonal weather events over a
long period of time
QUANTIFY BY METEOROLOGICAL
PARAMETERS:

• RAINFALL
• TEMPERATURE
• WIND (SPEED & DIRECTION)
• HUMIDITY
• PRESSURE
• CLOUDS
• VISSIBILITY
HYDROLOGIC CYCLE
Hydrologic Data

can be obtained from:

▪ National and regional archives or
libraries of weather stations
▪ Private organizations
▪ Research papers and reports
▪ Field observations
▪ Interview of people living in the area
▪ maps on related topics
TYPES OF WEATHER STATIONS

▪ AGROMETEOROLOGICAL STATION
▫ provides detail observations about meteorology and agricultural
development
▪ METEOROLOGICAL STATION
▫ conducts meteorological observations to provide weather forecasts
and to study weather and climate
▪ HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL STATION
▫ A station that observes meteorological and hydrological elements

EVAPORATION MEASUREMENT

▪ ATMOMETERS
▫ A water supply is connected to a porous surface and the amount of
evaporation over a designated time period is given by a measure of
the change in water stored.

EVAPORATION MEASUREMENT

▪ CLASS A PAN
▫ This is circular with a diameter of 1.21 m
and is 255 mm deep
▫ The water level in the pan is kept to
about 50 mm (2 in) below the rim
▫ The level is measured daily with a hook
gauge and the difference between two
readings gives a daily value of evaporation
▫ evaporation can also be obtained by
bringing the water level in the pan back
to a fixed level with a measured amount
of water
EXAMPLE:

▪ Total rainfall for March 4

TIME 8” Standard Evaporation
Rain Gauge pan hook ▫ Rt = 0mm+3.2mm=3.2mm
readings gauge
▪ Total pan evaporation for March 4
(mm) readings
(mm) ▫ Et = (81.4mm+0mm)-79.6mm
MAR 4 8AM 0.8 81.4 = 1.8 mm

2PM 0 79.6

MAR 5 8AM 3.2 82.5

2PM 5.6 84.9
